strange behaviors of plasmoids on the desktop (Bugzilla Bug 10)

plasmoids on the desktop are not blocked, but the lateral bar doesn't appear and i'm not able to resize/rotate them.

in plasma-applet-notes color list is empty

Luca.

From: @itchka

Hi Luca,
I don't think this is a bug. The default desktop is set to the newspaper activity which does not allow adjustments. If you right click on the desktop background and select activities and create a new activity using the Desktop Icons template you will find that the lateral bar will appear and the functionality you mention will be activated.
It would be best if you filed the second observation as a separate bug. When you have done so I will close this one.

From: @itchka

Hi Luca, My solution was unnecessarily complex you can change the format by right clicking and selecting "Default Desktop Settings" and then selecting "layout" if you choose "Desktop Icons" you will get the behavior that you want.

Hi Colin,
i choose "Desktop Icons" on it works great.
Sorry i don't know the newspaper mode.

Thanks.

i'll file later a separate bug for plasma-applet-notes.

Android in a Box

Allow running Android apps (I have Anbox sort of working, but we can do better than the Brokenbuntu crowd...)

Enable other repositories by default

Based on that review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOlRAF64UTk i may say that author is right from his point of view.

Showing an error that dependencies are broken does not help at all, as "not-advanced-as-us" users simply will not understand it and we leave then with bad experience.

I thin we should enable by default repositories on ISO and after installation:

  • 32 bit on 64 bit ISOs
  • non-free
  • restricted

I guess that just enabling these repositories will help less experienced users to give them better user experience. Ofcourse we can add any check to iso building script to catch if during iso build any package from that condemned repos are being pulled.

Build per cpu libc libraries

Idea is to ship per cpu tuned glibc libraries same as ClearLinux does.
They build glibc like this:

  • normal glibc build for x86_64
  • tuned glibc build for x86_64 with -march and -mtune set up

provide one i.e libc6 package that ships:
/usr/lib64/libm.so
/usr/lib64/$mtuned/libm.so

See here how it looks like https://github.com/clearlinux-pkgs/glibc

glibc is smart enough these days so it can pick right libraries that support cpu intructions.

python -c "import sys; v=sys.version_info[:2]; print '%%d.%%d'%%v" 2>/dev/null || echo PYTHON-NOT-FOUND

Do not blindly copy-paste text from rpm. You have doubled '%' to escape them in rpm, The pure command line should be

python -c "import sys; v=sys.version_info[:2]; print '%d.%d'%v"

Comment 8

Date: 2013-06-03 07:44:16 +0000
From: Denis Silakov <[email protected]>

Nothing has to be fixed, everything is ok.

rpm --showrc shows the macro or variable as it will be expanded in spec files. Inside spec file one should escape '%' with one more '%', this leads to the use of "print '%%d.%%d'".

Output of rpm --showrc is not supposed to be directly executed in Shell.

Still trying to weed out issues with Bugzillas mailing.
I discovered a problem in mailing set up.
The outgoing mail addressed is supposed to be a comma separated list of addresses in fact our list was separated by a comma and a 'space' on removing the space the pair of email addresses entered there was not accepted. Trying with an alternative address worker fine.
This led to the conclusion that this address was broken
[email protected].
Removing it allowed the use use of a comma separated list.
The [email protected] appears to be valid.
Doing this just as a test is accepted by bugzilla setup
[email protected],[email protected]
thus proving that a 'space' after the comma is incorrect syntax for the list.

So far workaround seems to be effective though.

Humbug. But don't be hornswaggled.

Some packages failed to build due Empty %files debugsourcefiles.list

Issue Report

OpenMandriva Version

Cooker/Rolling

Description

Following a few weeks, a lot of packages not built properly. This error appears:
error: Empty %files file /builddir/build/BUILD/qownnotes-20.7.4/debugsourcefiles.list

Example here: https://abf.openmandriva.org/build_lists/810270

Workaround is define in spec:
%global debug_package %{nil}

Can we fix this at some point? I suspect that if we do a mass rebuild a lot of packages will be broken due to this problem.

Reduce kernel size

Try to start a research on reducing kernel size, maybe disable some modules
which are not needed etc.

From: @cris-b

this is caused by the transition to c++ for drakx-installer-binaries I think.

we only link in pcmcia_probe.o on i586.

pcmcia_probe() is now a C++ symbol, so when we try to link pcmcia_probe.o and stuff.o using C compiler pcmcia_probe is still unresolved.

so I think we need a small wrapper built with C++ and with extern "C" linkage in drakxtools for stuff.c, or change drakx-installer-binaries to have extern "C" linkage for pcmcia_probe and move the log_message/log_perror defs into there.

Be I not mistaken, and it's late here, off to sleep, I think it's:

mkinitrd -f -v /boot/initrd-$version.img $version
or
dracut -f -v /boot/initrd-$version.img $version

where $version is taken exactly from one of
ls -1 /lib/modules

Running:

When trying to use ifup with a static network interface, ifup tries to call /sbin/arping; when in reality, the program is at /usr/sbin/arping. This causes ifup to fail until /sbin/arping is symlinked to /usr/sbin/arping.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Configure a static interface.
  2. Call ifup on the static interface.

initscripts-9.44-4omv building which includes a fix for this.

Use lib prefix for library packages for all architectures

Now that we use a combined multi-arch repository for 32-bit and 64-bit libraries for the x86_64 repository, we should also stop mutating the package name based on which libdir it installs into. RPM and DNF are perfectly capable of doing architecture selection properly for multiarch, so we can just have libfoo1 instead of libfoo1 and lib64foo1.

i had these problems in VirtualBox 4.2.0(1,5 gb ramm, 12 gb hd) so i don't think it's an hardware problem.

previous oma 64bit installs fine.

in 32bit version, during installation, a message tell me that kdm can not be installed.
when the system reboots i can not indicate passwd for root user(no cursor)

i'm not the only one with this problem.

Ok Luca,
I'll investigate, there are now some VirtualBox images available which will allow you to test other aspects of the release.
You can get them here:-

I added the following packages and things now work:

gstreamer-libav

gstreamer-plugins-bad
gstreamer-plugins-base
gstreamer-pulse

I believe that the dependencies on gstreamer need to be fixed.

I confirm this. I had to install gnucash and the gnucash and lib64gnucash packages both gave an invalid key. This usually means that the packages have not been rebuilt for some time. Could a dev please rebuild these to at least fix the missing key and maybe even fix this problem.

This will open a web browser window on Bugzilla where you'll find a form to fill in.
The information displayed above will be transferred to that server
It would be very useful to attach to your report the output of the following command: 'lspcidrake -v'.

Trying to run XFdrake to install driver for:

$ lspcidrake -v
...
nvidia_current,nvidia173,nvidia71xx,nvidia96xx,nouveau:
NVIDIA Corporation|C51PV [GeForce 6150] [DISPLAY_VGA]
(vendor:10de device:0240 subv:1043 subd:81cd) (rev: a2)
...

FWIW I don't think any of the listed drivers will work with
this hardware. 'nouveau' and 'nv' do not work on this box. It is going to need nvidia 304.88 which we don't have in openMandriva LX 2013. That is what is used and works in ROSA Fresh, Fedora 18, and openSuSE 12.3. Also that's what nVidia website says:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-304.88-driver.html

Neither 319.23 nor 310.xx drivers support GeForce 6 products (including GeForce 6150). I don't see a 310.44 even in their archives.
The 304.88 is the latest driver I know of that works with this hardware.
The 304.88 driver from nVidia website will work in Cooker on this box.

Luca could you post output of 'lspcidrake -v'? I'm wondering if this issue may be related to specific hardware?

Also when does this happen for you. For me XFdrake opens then seg faults when I select 'Graphic Card' hence my wondering if hardware related as this is the hardware detection step.

Yes Colin I believe you are correct. It appears to be hardware related. To begin with OM 2013 LX does not have a version of nvidia driver that will work with my hardware. And that is a bit odd as any other distro I use does so quite easily. So yes new bug report when I have time to do so properly and diligently.

After the installation of OpenMandriva (OMV) alpha, x86_64 version dated June 24th, no repo was added during installation.
When run MCC - Software Manager and tried to add automatically the repositories, an error appeared saying that $MIRRORLIST repositories cannot be added, and no repository was added at all.
Same symptoms in both system I'm running, one in a box and one in a VirtualBox VM.

Workaroud I used:
Execute from console as root:

urpmi.addmedia --distrib ABF64- http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/cooker/repository/x86_64/

urpmi.addmedia --distrib ABF32- http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/cooker/repository/i586/

dnf does not tell how many re-installs it is going to do

This is a bug in all versions of OpenMandriva Lx.

The issue:

dnf lists under "Transaction Summary" how many installs, removals, and upgrades it is going to do. But it fails to list reinstalls.

With our release plan this is becoming an important issue. Should be fixed. Not sure what this commit is supposed to do:

rpm-software-management/libdnf@b4c5a33#diff-0deadb3f76db1584b853a7ee7374d5fe

But what I know beyond any doubt is that the "dnf distro-sync" command does reinstall packages and that dnf does not tell the user how many transactions to expect. This seems unfair to people with slower internet connections and is inconvenient for the rest. Anyone with cooker can see the importance of this when disto-syncing after a mass build. Also anyone can reproduce this issue with "dnf reinstall >some_packages_list<.

I'll do my best to provide any information asked for or do any tests.

Well, it's 100% urpmi bug.

Way to trick it is use urpmi with --ignorearch or do echo "armv7l-mandriva-linux-gnueabi" >> /etc/rpm/platform
but this way brick's noarch packages, and noarch packages should be installed with --ignorearch.

From: @cris-b

i have finally got to the bottom of this.

The problem is in fact rpm itself. Our rpm5 does not use /etc/rpm/platform for x86_64 and i586 as we have support for cpuinfo library. However this library does not support ARM so rpm does not use it on that platform.

Therefore we still need to populate /etc/rpm/platform for ARM (or fix cpuinfo library to provide proper arm support and patch cpuinfo.yaml in rpm to include arm arches).

The reason rpm still works is that if there are no arches defined it wont bother doing any architecture checks (you can see this as rpm will not complain on ARM when installing an i586 package, aside from the various dependencies which arent met). perl-URPM doesnt check the number of architectures defined so fails as calling rpmPlatformCompare() on ARM can never return success with current config.

Comment 4434

Date: 2014-03-25 13:18:47 +0000
From: @cris-b

perl-URPM-4.48.5 has the same behaviour as rpm, ie if there are no arches it wont do the checks, so this should resolve the issue.

i tried it and could install rpms via urpmi without /etc/rpm/platform present or using --ignorearch

An experimental build that does what could be done if we didn't care about binary compatibility (glibc -> musl, libstdc++ -> libc++, libgcc -> compiler-rt) that doesn't replace the existing OS, but would be rather interesting to benchmark -- if only to see how much binary compatibility is costing us.

I need a URL that omvonline/mdkonline can use to determine whether a distribution upgrade is available.

It should mimic http://svnweb.mageia.org/web/releases/, and preferably be changeable by VCS so that releases are easier.

For reference: http://svnweb.mageia.org/soft/mgaonline/trunk/mgaonline.pm?view=markup line 95, which correlates with our line 113 for omvonline.

Use Ananicy

Consider installing by default Ananicy daemon on ISO.

Ananicy (ANother Auto NICe daemon) โ€” is a shell daemon created to manage processes' IO and CPU priorities, with community-driven set of rules for popular applications (anyone may add his own rule via github's pull request mechanism).

Ananicy is already packaged so to check how it works please follow below steps:

  1. dnf install ananicy
  2. Logout and log into Plasma
  3. Observe applications and overall behaviour of system
  4. Ananicy should improve application resposivenes

Set governor to Performance + Set same CPU governor on all archs

Looks like cpu governor is different for others architectures.
On my machines x86_64 by default I see governor set to conservative.
On @itchka machine is set to conservative too
On @benbullard79 machine is set to performnace.
On @tpgxyz machine is set to performance

If I good remember ben used znver, tpg znver too. I don't remember what Itchka has.

So looks like znver use performance and x86_64 use conservative.

This must be confirmed and if so, we need to set one common cpu governor for each architecture.
Maybe performance for all to make benchmarks happy (I do not want to remind that how badly LX 4.0 emerged in the last benchmark on Phoronix, due to the conservative governor).

So WYDT?

OnlyOffice

Add OnlyOffice as an alternative to LO (this is a bit painful because they use a load of nonstandard tools, including some prehistoric stuff)

Use LLVM/polly

Check if using Polly can speed up some libraries -- it should be possible to at least somewhat parallelize libjpeg and friends (but the tools for doing that automatically may not be up to the task yet)

Changing from standard FHS (with multilib) to some kind of multiarch layout?

Change the filesystem layout for multilib. Some distributions have started going for stuff like /usr/x86_64-linux-gnu/lib instead of /usr/lib64, /usr/i686-linux-gnu/lib instead of /usr/lib etc., and that's a really good idea because it allows installing compat libraries for more than just one 64bit and one 32bit architecture. This is useful especially now that qemu binfmt-misc stuff is working well and transparently launches stuff built for other architectures (think wine on ARM being able to run x86 Windows binaries because it has access to qemu and i686/x86_64 libraries). With the current lib64/lib FS layout, e.g. a user on aarch64 may want to install an x86_64 libjpeg to please whatever binary-only application and an i686 libjpeg to please wine -- but they can't go to /usr/lib64 (where aarch64 stuff lives) nor /usr/lib (where armv7hnl stuff lives).
We don't have to break compatibility with anything to do this -- /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib could be symlinks to the native 64 and 32 bit arches, so stuff hardcoding /usr/lib64 or /usr/lib would still find what it's looking for and install to the right place.

Network profiles are very useful in all portable devices that must be connected to several different networks. One of the jewel in the crown of Mandriva.

It would be useful an icon or any shortcut to have a simple way to know which profile is active and to change it if necessary. The best way could be show active profile and provide a way to change it in Network manager window.

In previous versions of Mandriva (till 2010.2 ?) we had netapplet in systray. Restoring it could be a faster alternative.

Now netprofile is part of the distribution and works well.

  1. Is it possible to show the active profile in network manager ?

  2. Allow an easy way to change profile. Is it possible to add a "kcm" applet to open netprofile window?
A good example is in MIB repos http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/rosa2012.1/64/basic/kcm-draknetprofile-1.0-69.2-mib2012.1.noarch.rpm

  3. As soon as the first netprofile is created add an item in menu to open netprofile window

To change netprofile you have to open MCC then choose network and finally Netprofile. It would be useful to have an icon in menu that open Netprofile window directly. We had it several years ago.
What I wrote in Description.

This utility has been superseded by NetworkManager. You can easily create network profiles in it. So the icon you seek exists it is called NetworkManager applet.

This is actually easy. Open the NetworkManager applet and click on the plus sign and create what ever you want. You can even assign certain users to a given connection. If users will spend maybe 5 or 10 minutes reading the NetworkManager documentation there is much, more you can do.

https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/NetworkManager

FWIW: The person who wrote the specific application you are talking about is gone, not with OpenMandriva. As with the vast majority of Linux distros in 2018 network functions at the user and administrator level are handled by NetworkManager. OpenMandriva developers tell me this is not going to change anytime soon.

The NetworkManager applet is also called the NM-connections editor. From:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkManager

NM-connections editor

The NM-connections editor is where the user can edit and create the various connection types. To invoke the nm-connections editor you need to right-click on the nm-applet and then click on Edit Connections. Clicking on that option would result in a tabbed window called network connections having different ways to connect to the network/Internet.

Netprofile can change in one shot proxy settings, urpmi settings, firewall, services and network connections? Especially useful if you use (like me) a notebook in different networks.
Netprofile affect all these settings? No!

This is actually easy. Open the NetworkManager applet and click on the plus

Thanks. I use normally networkmanager to manage networks connections (not proxy nor urpmi settings).

Then developers too don't know netprofile features?

If you want you can close this bug as "cantfix" but this isn't invalid.

Well OK then.

I can see the usefulness of this software but only for a small handful of users at this time. You aren't even close to the first person in computer science that has seem some useful, even very useful, software go away.

OpenMandriva developers are not even close to the best group to keep asking to resolve this. There are not enough of them. At this time there is no interest in helping system administrators do things with a GUI that can already be done from command line.

You could file an upstream bug report as a feature request with NetworkManager project.

Also you could do some research and see if you can find software that does what you want in Linux/Unix. Then if such software exists the possibility of importing it can be explored. Perhaps look first at Mageia, specifically Mageia's Manatools. There is discussion that Manatools be imported to OpenMandriva for Lx 4 release as a replacement for drakxtools. (That's discussion at this point, not definite.) But do look else where in Linux/Unix World as well.

Our developers keep insisting to me that you absolutely can do what you want in NetworkManager. No one says you can with one click. But it is doable and they say lots of folks do it. Further they tell me anyone who administers multiple computers that other people use should be able to do this with a little learning.
