Web Standards 101

I could give an short introduction to web standards for beginners.

This could include:

  • What are web standards, anyway? (Hint: HTML, CSS, and friends)
  • Why (and how) would you separate structure, presentation and behavior of a web app?
  • What does graceful degradation and progressive enhancement mean in this context?

I teach a course on those topics at HTW Berlin and I would basically summarize the content of the first session. I could also explain how to use Web Inspector/Chrome Dev Tools, if there's enough time.

What do you think?

Deploying web sites and applications

The goal would be to get an idea how I can publish my pages or my app on the internet.

We talked about that and the topic seems to be quite complex as nearly every environment (Rails, PHP, static pages, ...) have very different approaches. The idea of having an expert for each popular environment presenting a common way to do it seems to be a bit too much.

Alternatively, we could explain the basics like

  • What is a server
  • Local environment
  • Domains
  • FTP
  • using VCS or SSH to transfer
  • Staging, Dev, Live, whatever

So more giving an idea of the concepts and mentioning some vocabulary...

Invite Fiona of FionaLerntProgrammieren?

Hey,

there is this interesting blog https://fionalerntprogrammieren.wordpress.com/ by Fiona, who decided at the beginning of 2012 to learn to program and to document her steps in the weblog. For me the blog is fun to read because of her perspective on programming and the path she and her mentors decided to go (assembly -> c -> python; from hard to easy). I would like to ask her, if she wants to give a talk at our next beginners meetup. What do you think?
