andnav does not output first route instruction

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure the voice to instruct you at 50 metres
2. Stand near to a junction (less than 50 metres)
3. let a route calculate which needs to turn at the next junction
4. Go.

Expected is that you get an instruction to turn at the junction but you wont
get one, course the point which the software reach the function for that is
behind you. It is simply at exact 50 metres which is in this case a problem.

TTS does not identify roundabouts correctly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. When following a route (UK), the Text to Speech will give the following
direction at a roundabout when turning right (1st exit) or going straight
on (2nd exit)
2. "Take a left"
3. When turning left (1st exit) it will say "Take a right"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
On a left at a roundabout (assume 4 way), then I would expect the TTS to
say "take the first exit at the roundabout" or "turn left at the roundabout"
On a right at a roundabout, then I would expect the TTS to say "take the
third (or nth) exit at the roundabout" or "turn right at the roundabout"; etc

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
AndNav2 Version 0.8.8.2.1 Version No 20.

Better integration of "More" menu

If you push the Menu button, there are 5 options shown, and a "More"
option. Inside the More option are 9 more things, including two that I use
regularly (GPS status and Show Trace). It would be nice if I didn't have
to do Menu -> More -> scroll -> Show Trace while I am walking or driving.

Also, the Renderers button is redundant with the auto-hide button on the
main map display. Maybe include more features as auto-hide buttons to
reduce the number of clicks required to get to them?

Map doesn't follow position, only one [sic!] voice instruction

In AndNav2 v21 route calculation works for me (Desice, Android 2.1) but
when a route was calculated and I start the navigation there's only one
(the first) voice instruction. It seems, that AndNav doesn't recognize that
I'm moving since the map doesn't follow to my current position and neither
voice instructions nor the arrow symbols and distances are updated.

occassional flipping normal tiles with "Downloading" spinner

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start andnav and get GPS fix.
2. Manually zoom to 400m/cm resolution.
3. Observe that at some random moment (couple minutes later) normal tiles
for no reason are randomly and continuously are replaced with "Downloading"
spinner for a second and then showing the actual tile for another second.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The tiles remain shown properly.

Redesign the map (tile/vector) storage

The current system of storing tiles uses 2 orders of magnitude more storage
than OpenStreetMaps - the issue has been discussed on the wiki at
http://wiki.andnav.org/index.php/Talk:MapTilePacks#4_GB_for_the_Los_Angeles_area
.3F.21_When_the_entire_planet_OpenStreetMap_is_2.2GB.3F

Another problem with this kind of storage is the sheer number of files
necessary to hold the map tiles, which slow down the device - see
http://androidforums.com/samsung-i7500/12127-galaxhero-rom-slower-than-thought.h
tml#post69767

We might want to look at Navit and RMaps, which store the map much more
efficiently. RMaps simply puts all the tiles in a SQLite database and is
blazing fast at accessing them -

Allow reloading only tiles intersecting the current viewport

Thanks for the functionality of caching tiles. It's very useful. But I have
the feeling that when a tile has been cached once it's never updated again. At
the moment you can only clear the whole cache to force AndNav2 to update ALL
tiles. Since this is causing much traffic it would be nice to have a
functionality for updating only those tiles that are intersecting or inside of
the current viewport, independently from certain zoom levels.

I don't know if the map provider offers also information about the date a tile
has been updated last. If it does, one could also think about an automatic
reloading of outdated tiles. But that would be an own ticket.

Ineffective memory-wise tiles retrieval algorithm

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. zoom onto screenful area you want to preload at resolution 64miles/cm
2. start preload operation at level 16 (Streetscale)
3. Observe the memory usage going through the roof

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Memory usage remains constant. On 128MB FreeRunner after receiving about
100+ tiles (out of total 24000) andnav2 (SVN:2010-01-27)crashed again with
out of memory error:

re-calculation of routes is buggy (don`t know if this is a Andnav or an OpenRouteService issue)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Calculate a route and drive
2. don`t follow the driving instructions
3. andnav will recalculate the route and uses, i think an old data for the
point for starting, so the route doesn`t change and the driver should
turn 180 degrees :/ thats not possible in most situations :)

Correctly, the route should be calculated based on the actual location and
in honor of the driving direction, as normal navigation devices this do.
The new route should be not a 180degree turn arround, instead a fully
recalculated route, which in most cases will be another route.
Or if there is no route a correct "turning maneuver" for getting back.

As i said, I don`t know, if this is a issue of AndNav or OpenRouteService,
but i don`t think (and hope) the ORS guys made this failure :)

When entering OSM login information andnav should check if correct

As it is right now when entering OSM login information one has to be
careful to enter it correctly. Although traces are saved on SD, it would
still be nice if Andnav would simply try using the login information and
reporting any problems. The UI even mentions that one has to be careful to
enter it correctly.

Place or Move Sprites by Server Push

Based on a request from a service post a sprite on the map.
This sprite could represent any number of objects including (but not
limited to):
* buildings
* vehicles
* instructions
* features

The idea is that activating a specific service would permit that service to
post icons representing the objects it manages to the map.

e.g.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_or_road_name#Signage
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APP-6A
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Street_signs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warning_symbols

In addition to single point graphics various multipoint graphics would be
useful.

Some bugs I found in tile caching

Hi there.

I've been looking at the code and adding a few functionalities that would only
be useful to me... But I also found a few bugs, so I just thought I'd let you
know about it.

- Firstly, the openFileInputBasedOnStoragePolicy method in
src\org\andnav2\osm\views\tiles\caching\OSMMapTileFilesystemCache.java is buggy
(generates "unable to unlink" errors). My version is attached.

- Secondly, the deleteOldest method in
src\org\andnav2\osm\views\tiles\caching\OSMMapTileFilesystemCache.java needs to
be synchronized (otherwise leads to other "unable to unlink" errors, since some
threads try to delete tiles that have already been deleted by another one)

private synchronized int deleteOldest(final int pSizeNeeded) throws
EmptyCacheException

Good luck working on this project. Since it's almost not updated, I might make
my own releases one day... (but I'd gladly provide the source code to anyone
who asks for it.) Open source is good, but only if several people really work
on the project. If you're the only one on it, it just slows you down...

support offline navigation

Once issue 36 (http://code.google.com/p/andnav/issues/detail?id=36) is solved,
AndNav should add support for offline navigation, based on the vector data.

Online routing has many disadvantages:
- slow
- requires data connection (which is not always available, especially in
foreign countries, and which is often quite expensive).
- the current servers for online routing, are most of the time unstable or in
downtime.

support vector based OSM data and renderers

AndNav currently uses bitmap tiles to display the map.

This has several disadvantages:
- no offline routing possible
- maps (especially on higher zoom levels) need much more space
- downloading (for offline use) map sets is more difficult.

AndNav should support using a (online or offline stored) vector based version
of the map (directly from OSM), an include also some of the renderers (e.g.
mapnik) to show the maps.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Navigate around the map with the finger

It becomes unresponsive whenever it's loading a map tile, and when it's

Display blown-up or shrunken tiles when possible

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Zoom in or out to an area that is not cached

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
If you zoom in, it shows a blown-up tile for one level, but then shows
blank "Downloading" tiles after that.
If you zoom out, it just shows "Downloading" tiles.

Instead:

1. If you zoom in, it should initially show a blown-up image of the tiles
you were just looking at. If you zoom out, it should initially show a
shrunken image of the tiles you were just looking at. This should be
faster than loading anything from the web or SD card.
2. Then it should check if the tiles are on the SD card
3. If so, display them
4. If not, show the "Downloading" thing overlaid on top of the scaled image
that's there
5. If it can download it, replace with the downloaded tile
6. If it can't download it, just leave the resized tile there

AndNav should avoid using 10000+ 2kb images as data source for maps

Actually this is a feature request, as you know fat32 systems eat all space
because of clock sizes so a 100Mb tiles folder will eat around 600Mb of
space on the sd card of devices which is odd...

This problem should be fixed but, very important not to sacrifice speed,
the speed of the application is way more important than having less space
on the sd card.

I have done some investigations and found a topic somewhere about truezip
which could solve the problem but will sacrifice speed a lot as the
archives don't support changing contents that easy, what happens sometime
is that a new file is created (you just can't permit creation of another
2GB zip just because you need to add another 3kb image somewhere),
especially on a mobile device.

I saw that truezip is already in lib folder but it's not used. It can't be
used on android as is, so I made a small truezip jar that has only the
essential and don't give errors but still does not work yet. I gave up on
the idea because of the duplicating zip problem.

I propose that in here we should join all infos related to this issue in
search of a good and fast implementation for storing images on sd cards.

Also when time comes and I have a quality patch for this issue, I will need
rights to submit it, but that's another story, for now we have to find a
good solution for the issue.

No routes can be calculated, no adresses are found

What steps will reproduce the problem?
Try to navigate to/find an andress. Even big cities (even without giving a
street name) cannot be found. When the "searching" window appears it
happens just nothing.

I think this is caused by the same problem: When I use the map to set a
route's destination (I can't do that via an adress, see above) the
"calculating route" window appears and it happens nothing more, too.

The problems also occur when I download local maps to the device. I'm not
sure but I think route calculation is still done remotely, isn't it?

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
see above
