Special Issue Information

The objective of this Special Issue is to explore art and architectural historiographies that intend to place Eurocentric narratives under critical scrutiny, shaping models that manage to challenge the Western canon, and labels such as “other” or colonial. It aims to investigate the impact of the dissolution of colonialist models on art and architecture history. It places particular emphasis on historiographical approaches that question Zeitgeist theories, which had served to legitimize modernism. Over the last four and a half decades in the fields of art history and architecture history, there have been, in many cases, numerous endeavors that aimed incorporate postcolonialist criticism into art and architecture. However, these efforts often failed to go beyond the peril of “provincializing” Europe. By depicting Europe and the West as a homogeneous power of domination over the rest of the world, postcolonial criticism turns Europe into the blind spot of its own discourse. This Special Issue welcomes articles that analyze art history and architecture history approaches that challenge dichotomies, such as Western/non-Western or Eurocentric/non-Eurocentric. At the core of the reflections that are developed in this issue is the relationship between art and architecture history and structures of power and dominant ideological agendas in the societies under study.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Arts is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Define critical history

The section on critical history begins without a definition of the concept; or put this definition in the Introduction

Near the beginning of the Critical history section, fragments are abruptly discussed. Need to define and explain their relation to critical history.

Main takeaways

To emphasize in Introduction and conclusion:

  • Comparative histories are not just Idealistic philosophies of history, but draw from the Humanistic histories a sense of closeness with our historical forebears and a close interest in their professional practice and technique. #11
  • A radically critical textbook that fragments and deconstructs rather than synthesizing is impossible, cf. #13 and #12. Celebrating fragments is only possible from the standpoint of having been educated in the synthetic timeline, and is meaningless to a student who holds no big picture to fragment in the first place.
  • Problem of disciplinary, critical fields.
  • How history teaching in the 21st century (now) goes beyond the comparative/critical divide while pretending to hold on to the critical toolkit.

EAHN 2022 Full paper submission

we have today received further instructions from the conference organisers:

Regarding the attached preliminary program: If you find any typo or mistake that needs to be corrected, please let us know as soon as possible to fix it, before the book of abstracts which will include the program goes to print.

On paper preparation_ Now just a reminder of the upcoming deadlines:
15 of February, speakers to send draft papers to chairs.
15 of March, chairs to provide feedback on papers to speakers.
15 of April, chair to submit the final versions of the papers to the conference email address. Please before submitting them to us, make sure that they follow the guidelines and instructions for authors (attached), they are thorough and we believe that they cover every instance that you may need in preparation of their papers.

We all need to keep the deadline of 15 April, the sooner you send your draft paper to us, the more time we will have to give you appropriate feedback and comments, and you to revise it. Please remember that we are a RT, not a session, therefore your initial contributions should be no longer than 10 mins, and therefore your paper around 2000w. By 15 of February or at least as soon as possible, we would like to receive your contribution to the RT, 2000w outlining your position, so that we can prepare the discussion, maybe group some of the papers together, and provide you with feedback to make sure the papers make sense together. Remember that publication of a full paper in the proceedings is optional, and that your abstract can appear instead in the proceedings.

On conference attendance and participation: Finally, we maintain the firm aim to deliver a face-to-face event and welcome you all to Madrid. In the case of speakers unable to travel to Spain due to government or university's travel restrictions and bans, we will consider the possibility of those speakers joining their sessions online to present their papers and take part in the discussion. However, online attendance and participation at the event will NOT be possible, this will NOT be a hybrid event, both online and face-to-face. We would like to again encourage everyone for which this is possible, to travel to Madrid, and to discover the city and its surroundings with the tours that we are preparing as part of the conference's program.
