iblis's Issues

There's a lot of conflicting advice on this on the internet, where people have taken the same data from Battery University and taken them to mean completely different things.

The ideal charge cycle is somewhere between 60 to 80% or so, and if you absolutely have to go mobile and rely on the battery (like in the case of a mobile phone), it makes sense for you to try to maintain these thresholds, because you can't avoid the discharge cycle.

Things do get muddled when you talk about laptops which can be used while plugged in all the time. There's not many discharge cycles being used here as the current to the battery is cut off and just topped up from time to time. So leaving it plugged in is also a viable solution.

However, leaving it plugged in (essentially storage) and at high battery levels impacts longevity more than leaving it plugged in at lower battery levels. My laptop for example has an option to limit the maximum charge threshold (I've set it to 70%, so my battery level never crosses 70%) so it affects battery life the least.

Continuously charging and discharging (whether it's 80-40 or 80-60) also consumes charge cycles which negatively impacts battery life. It's definitely much much better than going from 100-0, sure but that's all we know.

Ultimately, your battery is going to get old anyway, whatever you do, and the jury is still out on whether you should go to the effort of disconnecting and reconnecting your power cable every hour.
