I would agree with your analysis. A few days after reporting this, I discovered one calendar item in particular that is causing fits in Outlook standard UI.

The 2.2.0.6 hotfix you've provided appears to be working very well on my machine.

So there appears to have been 2 appointments with this issue:-
2016-04-12 2:00 PM (R) => "SAP Computer Infrastructure Mtg"
2016-04-14 8:30 AM (R) => "Weekly SYSCHG Meeting"

Do both of these items have a problem if you just try and open them in Outlook? Either way, I don't think we have much choice but to exclude them from being synced (as I did for the hotfix).

Excluding the items (hotfix solution) sounds reasonable to me. Since reporting this, the calendar items causing the issue have been cleaned up from my PC. I do not expect this to be a long-term issue.
