chk

chk is an R package for developers to check user-supplied function arguments.

It is designed to be simple, customizable and fast.

Installation

To install the latest release version from CRAN.

install.packages("chk")

To install the latest development version from r-universe.

install.packages("chk", repos = c("https://poissonconsulting.r-universe.dev", "https://cloud.r-project.org"))

To install the latest development version from GitHub

Demonstration

chk provides simple commonly used checks as (chk_ functions) which can be combined together for more complex checking.

chk_flag(y)

Or used inside functions to test user-provided arguments.

Error messages follow the tidyverse style guide while the errors themselves are rlang errors of class chk_error.

Use template for chk functions

ie have return values (which are always the same for all functions) together with params in a single template that can be inherited.

Rename params.R as template.R.

add chk_join

base it off checkr::check_join but perhaps simplify

Inlined versions of chk_*()

Function calls are costly in R, around 1 µs. For very tight loops we could offer inlined versions, expanded by defmacro::onload().

The implementations of chk_*() would use the corresponding inlined version internally.

update deprecated.R file

  • change all calls to .Deprecated to deprecated_soft()
  • remove arguments (ex. (x)) in what = & with = parameters of deprecated_soft
    • Example of corrected code: deprecate_warn("0.2.0", what = "chk_files()", details = "Please use chk_all(x, chk_file)")
  • add tests to ensure the deprecated code is working correctly

Automatically build pkgdown documentation

Is there a reason not to?

Two options to do this that work out of the box:

  • usethis::use_pkgdown_travis()
  • tic::use_tic()

I'd recommend to host pages from the gh-pages branch.

create params file

move all parameters from referencing chk_flag to reference stand alone parameter file

Implement styling that removes space after if

Similar to

transformers <- styler::tidyverse_style(strict = FALSE)

# Don't add space after shortcuts

styler::style_pkg(".", transformers = transformers)

but adding a transformer derived from transformers$space$add_space_after_for_if_while instead of removing it.

Add y as attribute to the error condition in chk_equal() and friends

and provide a way to retrieve it.

rlang::last_error() already works in most situations because we're using abort(); the y value would be available as an attribute in the "last error" object so that we don't need to use dput() to show it in full in the error message. (Also, the length of error messages that are displayed is limited.)

add chk_join()

simply check all in x in y ie no need for unique on y.

Static analysis of chk_*() calls

The concept of the package assumes that chk_*() checks only the first (and sometimes the second) argument x and y, never optional arguments like class.

With a technique similar to defmacro::onload() we could offer a helper that checks all functions in a package if its chk_*() calls are correct (e.g. that class is a string in chk_s3_class(), #74).

Update _pkgdown.yml groupings

In particular make sure that it is complete and that it includes:

check_ functions
recently added chk_integer etc functions

chk_s3_class() allows checking for multiple classes

inherits() is really rlang::inherits_any(); should we document that and fix the error output?

add check_data() function

that similar to checkr::check_data() in what it takes as arguments - partner with validate_data().

chk_* functions to return input ?

Hi all,

chk_* functions all return NULL as far as I can see. It is at odds with other assertion packages {assertive} and {checkmate} which return the unchanged inputs invisibly.

It would allow things like return(chk_character(value)) or if(chk_scalar(cond)) expr.

Maybe it's about performance ? If not I think changing the behavior would avoid surprises from users used to the other behavior.

Use is.atomic(x) || is.list(x) for chk_vector()

NB: is.vector() does not test if an object is a vector. Instead it returns TRUE only if the object is a vector with no attributes apart from names. Use is.atomic(x) || is.list(x) to test if an object is actually a vector.
