puts(polyhack.created_at) # > 26th of July, 2012

Hi,

I'm trying to identify a 'birthdate' for the channel. It's more or less a cosmetic reference point, but it'd be nice to have a firmer idea of knowing how old the channel was. It's nearing its second anniversary, I believe.

Initial ideas for polyhack came out of a Melbourne Node Night meetup we were holding at Inspire9. A few of us going along (@deoxxa, @wolfeidau , others) weren't really into the typical meetup format. So we changed to a hack group and made a background IRC channel. We had an IRC presence in #nodejsau, where a bunch of others were sitting - @markmandel, Tony Milne, etc. etc.. So we switched over to #polyhack.

If I have left out names from the above, apologies. It really doesn't matter who came first to the channel. I'm just trying to assemble a history.

I have emails that mention the group in late July, the 26th, to be exact.

So, what if we just assume that to be the anniversary date? I realise that it's this weekend. If people want to have drinks because of it, or a hack session, then next weekend is good enough.

Cheers,
Nick

Great to see some people in person at CampJS. I want to do more of that.

I had a chance to meet some of you in person at CampJS, which I am very happy about. Some I am sure I have seen around at previous camps and just not known who they were or not been sure, some I have probably seen around but still not made the connection between physical humans and irc nicks.

Can we do something at the next camp like all go to the same place and drink some drinks or something? I can force myself to get over my awkwardness and be more bold about approaching people at random, but it would be a lot less exhausting for me if everyone gathered in one place for a while.

If drinks change to for-sale next camp, I could probably buy everyone a drink.

Polyhack Melb Lunch

We're planning on having a lunch catch up on Monday (15th) - we know it might be a bit short notice for people but if anyone wants to come you're more than welcome.

Location may change, but we're thinking Kedai Satay on King St @ 1pm at the moment. If anyone else has any suggestions just comment.

@nicholasf @pomke @CuriaD @aussiegeek @deoxxa @eugeneware @mattallen @bulkan @sporto @vacri @wolfeidau - apologies if I missed anyone (maybe we should add a wiki page with locations?)

Changing the channel topic - picking an IRC bot

Hey,

We want to set up an IRC bot to let channel members change the topic. It'd be terrific if someone wanted to step up and do this. We'd ideally like something that would be fun for the channel.

We could use rvagg's polyhackbot (Node) - https://github.com/polyhack/polyhackbot - or I could dust off spoonbot (Elixir) - https://github.com/nicholasf/spoonbot . Or we could pick something else.

The channel topic should function like a community noticeboard that every member can change. We'll probably need to define a membership list somewhere that the bot can work with. Probably ... I'm uncertain ... we could make it that anyone could use the bot to change the topic ...

So that's the baseline in requirements.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Nick

polyhack.net - polling for input

Hey guys,

I've registered polyhack.net. I've been wanting to create a membership site for ages so we can introduce what the channel is about to newcomers and keep a membership list.

We've been hanging out in #polyhack for a year and a half, I think. I have an email I sent out to a list of peeps about making the channel - I'll dig up the date but I think it was August 2012. So we have a kind of birthdate.

Anyway, I'd like to keep the site really simple - maybe a quick introduction to what the channel is about and who its members are. Just a plain HTML document to start with, we can think about hooking up blogs, etc., later on, but starting out simply is appealing.

If you think there'd be something good to include on the site, let me know. If you want to help out, let me know. I'll create some text and run it by the channel so there's a rough democratic process going on here.

Cheers,
Nick

Registering #polyhack

Hey all,

So today we had a slight issue with a visitor and it's prompted the question about whether we need ops and how we handle channel rudeness.

It's been a background conversation for a while.

The good thing is that we have a strong agreement about how we want to treat each other. That's really awesome. And if someone steps out of line then patiently explaining it to them and giving them a chance to adjust to it might help onboard them with it.

But that won't cover every situation as the community grows so I'd like to register #polyhack officially with Freenode and want to discuss the best way to handle bad behaviour in channel, so we can come to a group decision about an ops policy, etc..

If anyone is rude then please /ignore them and encourage others to do so via private msg, or create a ticket here, as a first step.

Ideas are welcome about how to handle this, of course. I'd really like #polyhack not to become a place where the status of an op interferes with how the channel functions, so it's a topic to think about.

Cheers,
Nicholas

Melb Xmas drinks - 13th of December, 6 pm.

What: Polyhack Melbourne Xmas drinks.
Where: CBD location yet to be determined. Somewhere that will let in SomeoneWeird too.
When: 13/12/13, 6 pm.
Why: Come out and have a few drinks at the end of the year with the polyhack crew.

Can you please +1 this if you're in Melbourne and would like to grab a drink at this time, in the city?

I'll sort out a location once I have an idea of numbers. Happy to discuss it in channel.

I can't go to the Xmas Drinks

PLATFORMS: MP

EXPECTED RESULT: I can go to the Xmas Drinks

ACTUAL RESULT: I can't go to the Xmas Drinks

WORKAROUNDS: None

IMPACT: SEVERE

code of conduct, etc

Here's what I suggest.

  1. We elect three people to handle all polyhack matters for 1 year. Those three people can make decisions for the channel; they can maintain the membership list and the website, they can organise polyhack social events. @wolfeidau and I will op them but won't otherwise act for the channel.

  2. People who are on the core list at github get to vote. If they aren't there, no vote. The github core list becomes our membership register.

  3. We define a code of conduct so people new to the channel can understand what is required of their social behaviour.

The idea is that we evolve our membership so the most active people in the channel control how it runs. There will be mistakes but we'll work them out as they arrive.

Stickers!

So, with CampJS coming up (again!) - I'm going to look at buying stickers, seeing as we left it too late last time. If anyone has any design skills and wants to try their hand at another logo (also see here) - just post it.

Should @tonymorris / dibblego be unbanned?

So, this is the issue I spoke about in #18. If you want, you can comment ban/unban.
Feel free to express other opinions about it here, too.

The poll will end at midnight Thursday 2nd April AEDT.

Edit: Also, if people want to vote 'ban' but don't want their decision on public record, message me on IRC and we can try work something out.

Sydney polyhack session - lunch, hack, then dinner and drinks.

Hey guys,

Which Sydneysider polyhackers would be up for a hack session one Saturday, after Easter? I was thinking it might follow what we do in Melbourne sometimes - find a good place for lunch, then head to a cafe/hack space for the afternoon and see what happens in the evening.

The main thing is to find a good hack space for the Saturday afternoon. Any suggestions?

I think Rob Howard, Michael Neale and myself are keen right now. Anyone else interested?

Cheers,
Nick

Community Guidelines Document

Okay, I've merged the PR from @davidmason for the community guidelines. We've left this long enough, so I'm going to kickstart the effort to get it finished.

A few comments from the PR:

We need to figure out what we mean by "general consensus. There are a few ways we can look at this, a consensus can be gained by either achieving a percentage of the votes with a "yay", or we can presume consensus if there are no major "nay"'s. Do we wait for a certain number of people to vote? Active members? What percent of them? How long do we wait?

We also need to define specific guidelines. Currently that section of the document is empty, thus making it effectively useless at the moment.

ban explanation

Hey,

A brief explanation about banning dibblego.

I talked through my reasons with wolfeidau. It wasn't a quick decision. It's accurate to say that it has been based over weeks rather than days.

The simplest way to put it is that he has often come into channel wanting to begin a fight. He obviously has a passion to teach Haskell.

Another major aspect is that we are a polyglot community and he has continually derided programmers who use languages that don't match his preference. This wasn't a fit for the ideas based about why we formed. Nor is the channel a classroom to assume levels of status and attitude toward others as to whether they classify as a student or a teacher.

We are a community of geeks, intellectuals, hackers, professionals, students; programmers who want to invest time learning and discussing ideas. We will probably have a lot of eccentric characters in our midst who want to defy social rules and will object to heavy rulesets.

But we do need a shared mode of collegial conduct ...

Tolerance and respect are qualities that are important in how we address the programming passions of others in the channel; whether someone is a beginner or an expert.

Best,
nicholasf

Drinks and dinner for [Neurotic] before he departs Melbs for San Francisco

@markmandel is relocating to San Francisco and joining Google over there. So let's have some drinks and dinner to celebrate this!

YEAH!!

partytime

When: after work on onwards, Friday evening, 24th April
Where: In a place far far away (in Melbourne CBD somewhere)

We'll probably grab a meal in Chinatown, or something along those lines. If anyone knows of a cool bar we should check out (that can fit a few of us), please list your suggestion here.

+1 if you are intending to come, so we can have an idea of numbers. I'll seek confirmation in the final week if I need to book anywhere.

#polyhack, the community, and moving forward.

Over the weekend, two of our founding members have decided to leave over an unfortunate conflict of opinion (see #14). This has left many unanswered questions about what is happening with the community, and left people wary about things in general.

One of the largest aspects that can be taken from the above issue, is that we lack community consultation around certain non-trivial events. As it was the first time a member (not somebody who has joined and immediately spammed) has been banned, there were certain things overlooked, and things we can do better in the future.

As has been said, polyhack is a lot larger than it was a year ago, we now have 60+ members in the github org, and we're still probably missing a few that hang out in IRC (message me if you want to be added!). Things are obviously changing, and that begs the question of how to we maintain control over abuse.

polyhack was only frantically registered late last year in order to stop a number of spamming in the channel, before then we had no concept of administrators or 'people with power' (apart from the few people with owner status for the github org) see #10.

We need to tackle these problems upfront, and not let them culminate until another issue happens.

There have been a few things that have been suggested, such as a code of conduct (see #15 - thanks @davidmason!). This is a fantastic idea, and we should implement it - it just needs a little bit of work first.

One of the things we need to make a decision about in the immediate future, is @tonymorris's ban. I'm not going to immediately write it off, but theres enough people -1'ing in #14 which warrants initiating a vote, so I will create another issue that people can +1/-1 on the idea of an unban.

And last but not least, but very important:

part of what makes polyhack great is that despite "cultural" tensions everyone holds it together
