I think this is not the correct way of grabbing the results. You right-shifted LSB for 1 bit, and left-shifted MSB for 8 bits. So one bit is "inserted" between MSB and LSB. I think MSB should only be left-shifter for 7 bits.

Something like this:
uint16_t msb = (uint16_t)buff[0] << 7;
uint16_t lsb = (uint16_t)buff[1] >> 1;
result = msb | lsb;
