Currently monsters drop a random amount of gold and XP

Monsters actually do not drop a random amount of gold and XP, but a fixed amount based on the player's level. It's usually a multiplier. This multiplier changes among monster species but stays static between monsters of the same species. I don't know if we want this to change.

Perhaps add some randomness to the amount so that between monsters it varies slightly
