Gastronomy can actually be three different libraries:

• calculating digests (its original purpose)
• cryptographic operations (encrypting, signing, verifying, etc)
• serialization of binary data into BASE-64, Hex, etc

PEM parser is brittle and (apparently) untested

Handle errors in BASE64 decoder

If the Base64 decoder encounters an illegal character, a Java exception gets thrown, which isn't handled.

This should return a hash, much like digest does, but should read the contents of the target object (using readAs[Bytes]) rather than just hashing the object itself.
