Black keeps reformatting some code chunks back and forth between 2 different representations

I can't reproduce this. Are you sure you are running the same version of Black every time?

Yes. Perhaps it requires more surrounding code context? I'm using a script that runs it. Let me try running it manually on one of the half a dozen files it does this to...

OK. Closing. Now it's not doing it. It has happened half a dozen times this morning. No clue why. Probably something I did. Sorry to bother.

The only thing I can think is... I didn't realize I hadn't pulled changes from the repo, and had done some work on the code. When I went to push, I got the rejection, so I pulled and merged the changes on the remote and resolved 3 conflicts (though the conflicting files weren't an entirely overlapping set with the ones that black was changing). After committing the merge results, it no longer changed back and forth. Is black somehow aware of changes in the git log? I didn't think it would, but that's the only thing I can think that could be related to this.

Black doesn't look at the git log.

Well then I'll chalk it up to a fluke. Still probably something I did.
