utf-8 characters in city names missing

We have lots of umläute, accents etc in our citydefs table by now. On my arch install, firing up drawinglife from a zsh terminal, I get the following warning and the city names featuring these characters are missing (Lübben > Lbben)
[warning] ofInit: Couldn't set UTF-8 locale, string manipulation functions won't work correctly for non ansi characters unless you specify a UTF-8 locale manually using std::locale::global(std::locale("locale")) available locales can be queried with 'locale -a' in a terminal.
