Text async status and settings

In absence of a real async GUI, we want an IPython console way to view async status and configure per-layer async settings.

Show previous and next slice at the same time

🚀 Feature

It's disconcerting and confusing when the whole screen goes black when when a slice is loading asynchronously. We are thinking VispyImageLayer should have a Compound visual that includes the previous and next slices.

Thumbnails not appearing with some data

🐛 Bug

From Nick: On initial loading the thumbnails don't appear to be there even though the data is there. They start appearing part way through the demo.

Here is code https://github.com/sofroniewn/image-demos/blob/master/examples/remote_smFISH.py. Data is public, so hopefully anyone can reproduce
