Some modifications in pqR are just to particular primitives, and might be possible to implement as a package that modifies functions in an existing R implementation. Most pqR modifications aren't of this sort, however. For example, I have made substantial modifications to the garbage collector, to the mechanism for dispatching to code implementing primitives, and to the functions that perform symbol lookups. Furthermore, I have changed the representation of objects, in order to allow for better tracking of the number of references to an object (and hence avoid copying in more situations), and to allow for parallel computation in helper threads. These modifications can't be incorporated into packaged that could be loaded into an existing R implementation.
