[TTS] - Generating Consecutive Speech

Hi

I want to block the thread/method until the speak() has finished.
I have coded this :

myTTS.speak(text, 0, s );
while ( myTTS.isSpeaking() == true )  {
   try {
      Thread.sleep(500);
   }
   catch (InterruptedException e)  {}
}

Unfortunately, it seems isSpeaking() returns too early.

In my app I need to speak several sentences, one at a time.
I need to wait until the 1st sentence is finished COMPLETELY before I do a
speak() for the next one.

[Eyes-Free Shell] Remove Pre-recorded Audio

The shell's use of two voices brings along with it a number of usability
and aesthetic issues. Synthesized and sampled speech talking at two
separate rates, volumes and pitches makes for an inconsistent experience
wherein some parts of speech are too loud while others are too quiet. I
tend to have my phone's TTS volume set low due to privacy concerns and
respect for those nearby, but the sampled speech is too quiet for this and
I end up missing half of my phone's data points. It's also quite noticable
in the Youtube videos wherein the synthesized speech clips quite a bit
because the phone's volume must be cranked to pick up the quiet samples.

I've patched my shell to not use any sampled speech except for the
backspace, because I'm not instantly sure how to set pronunciation for a
given string. The experience is much better, faster and more consistent.

[TTS Extended] - Unavailable on Android Market

1. I've downloded Google Translator for android by QR code at
http://translate.google.ru/about/intl/ru_ALL/tour.html#mobile
2. After start up I was requested to install SVOX data. It was installed
successfuly.
3. In the same messege there was request to install "Расширенный
синтезатор речи" (Expanded speech sequencer). I pressed buton
"Install". But error message has appeared "No results in Android Market for
pname:com.google.tts query"
4. By usual search I found this project home page. I've downloaded
tts_3.1_market.apk. And installed it from PC.

I'm using HTC Wildfire, Android 2.1, WiFi connection at home, Moscow, Russia.

Why I can't get TTS from Android Market?

Install prompt pops up onResume rather than onCreate.

Even though TTS initialization is part of the onCreate method of an
activity, the install prompt appears to pop up every time onResume is
executed. It is somewhat annoying to a user who has decided not to use TTS
support for the time being. Making it truly appear onCreate only seems more
appropriate.

[Eyes-Free Shell] Allow Track Ball Navigation

Please can you add navigation through menu options in eyes free shell with
the trackball or d-pad (perhaps movement around the 9 grid on the main
screen using trackball/d-pad, then reset if stroking the keyboard).

This will permit the eventual use of a bluetooth chorded keyboard (such as
gkos.com) to send up, down, left, right controls to the device, and
navigate around the Eyes-Free-Shell while the device is in a pocket or similar.

1. Go to the talking dialer app on the Motorola Droid
2. Touch the phone's Menu button to toggle from Dial mode to Phonebook Mode

Currently the TTS volume is connected to the media volume. As a result,

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Please update this for the Motorola Droid. The Droid doesn't have a call
button.
2. You must press the "call button" twice to make a call using the talking
dialer but the Droid doesn't have a call button.

3. Please make it so you can perhaps a double tap will call, on the droid
versus the call button.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect once I dail a number that I am able to make a call using the
talking dialer. However, I can't place a call at all using the talking
dialer since the droid doesn't have a hard call button like the other
Android phones do.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Please provide any additional information below.
I am visually impaired and really appreciate the the Android OS driven
phones are accessible. HOwever, an update needs to be made to the talking

[TTS] onSpeechCompleted() Callback Never Fires.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. use TTS (not TextToSpeechBeta)
2. try to use a callback for end-of-speech in any form
3. it never gets called.

I tested using Stub 1.7 and APKs for 1.7 and 2.0. The speech works, but
the callback will not fire no matter if you set the callback listener
before or after the TTS inits.

I hope that this will not be punted, as 1.7 was the last version that
supported Android 1.5 and earlier. I find the rest of the value in the TTS
Extended whimsical alongside this lost benefit.

[TTS] - Library Reporting Not Installed

I'm having intermittent problems where applications using the TTS library
will ask me to install the TTS library, even though it is already installed.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
I'm not sure how to reliably reproduce the problem.
But the following reproduces it at least some of the time for me:
1. Install TTS library on your phone.
2. Install an application using the TTS library on your phone,
   e.g. "TTS Translator" from the Market.
3. Shut down the phone and then turn it on again
   (just to try to get things in a known state to make this
   more reproduceable).
4. Start the application (e.g. TTS Translator).

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect TTS translator to speak the translations.
Instead, it pops up a window asking me whether or not I want\
to install the TTS library. If I click on the button to install it,
it goes to the Market activity which shows that TTS is already installed.

I have observed this even when running the TTS main activity itself
(clicking on the "Listen to a preview" button)...
in that case, you have the nonsensical situation of TTS asking you to
install TTS.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

TTS 1.3.2 on Android (cupcake).

Please provide any additional information below.

Mispronunciation issues

I wasn't 100% sure where this should go, so I'll put it here where it should
get seen, and if it's the wrong place then someone can tell me to move it.

There are a few words that the TTS fails to pronounces correctly, which can be
problematic if you're relying on it for directions when driving somewhere
you're not familiar with. I was just wondering if it might help to list the
words it has trouble with, so that exceptions can be identified - maybe it
would help with working out amendments to the rules to improve the accuracy.

The one I've noticed it consistently having trouble with is Solihull (a town
south of Birmingham that I've been driving through lately). It should be
pronounced with the emphasis on the So, and the li pronounced as in lick. TTS
pronounces it with the emphasis on the li, which is pronounced as in like.

I know it's a nitpick, but I just wanted to help improve an already very useful
tool.

Update of TalkingDialer Deprecated Code in ShakeDetector

I've updated the ShakeDetector.java code to remove deprecated method usage,
and replace it with up to date methods.

I'm building against Android 1.6. As far as I know, this is the minimum
required API to correctly use Talking Dialer, if I am in error, please let
me know.

I've attached a diff file & the source, which has a list of all purposed
changes, but in general the SensorListener class has been deprecated in
favor of SensorEventListener. I've updated the ShakeDetector class to use
the new class, along with properly updated methods.

Lastly, the registerListener methdor has been updated to the non-deprecated
version.

I tested this build on my G1 and everything seems to be working fine. If
there is anything I need to change, please let me know.

If there is anything wrong with my submission, please inform me and I will
fix it.

Thank you.
