reflective-seasons's Issues

Ingest ECMWF ERA5 data

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe:

I need hourly ECMWF ERA5 data in order to determine the hottest week of the year for every location on Earth. Reflective Earth does not currently have this data in its GCS buckets.

Describe the solution you'd like:

I'd like a notebook capable of downloading reanalysis fields from ECMWF Copernicus Climate Change Service and uploading them to Google Cloud Storage as NetCDF files, one file per day.

Describe alternatives you've considered:

I looked for hourly ERA5 data on other platforms, but could not find that timescale or the required fields.

Additional context:

I need the following 5 fields:

  • 2m temperature
  • Surface net solar radiation, clear sky
  • Surface solar radiation downward, clear sky
  • TOA incident solar radiation
  • Top net solar radiation, clear sky

Make the project open source

Reflective Earth Foundation aspires to embody the principles open science in its work. Where code is used to generate insights, the organization wants to open source it for the common good. Following reflective-potential, this repository is a good candidate for open sourcing. Prior to making the repository public, the following documentation and resources should be added via a PR:

Map the seasonality of potential surface-reflected outsolation

In the reflective-potential repo, we developed a method to estimate annual-mean surface-reflected outgoing solar radiation (i.e. outsolation) using top-of-atmosphere and surface solar radiation fluxes (incoming and outgoing). In this repo we aim to do the same, but for the annual cycle using all-sky and clear-sky solar radiation fluxes. We use all-sky to represent average conditions and clear-sky to represent heat wave conditions (extreme heat usually coincides with few or no clouds).

For the purposes of exploratory data analysis, map the potential surface-reflected outsolation as follows:

  • Maps of potential surface-reflected outsolation for each calendar month
  • Animation of the twelve calendar months
  • Map the annual range (max - min) of surface-reflected outsolation
  • Map the month with highest surface-reflected outsolation
