Learning Laravel and Vue.js, generate JSON objects

Option 1: using $hidden on the model

The very first option is adding the field which you do not want to expose in public to the $hidden array.

$hidden = [ 'email', 'password', 'token' ];

Option 2: using another specific eloquent relation method

That says generally we have a post belongs to an user by adding a relation method in both models, like so:

// User.php
public function posts() {
    return $this->hasMany(Post::class);
}

// Post.php
public function user() {
    return $this->belongsTo(User::class);
}

But when you are building an API endpoint that retrieving all posts of an user and you want just the name field of user, you can create another method doing the specific query.

// Post.php

public function user() {
    // by the way, select 'id' in a must
    return $this->belongsTo(User::class)->select(['id', 'name']);
}

Personally, I like the second approach.
