This is currently by design.
To help me understand your use case, I wanted to clarify a couple of questions.
You're intending to run just one client instance correct? And you want to configure it yourself? Currently, although the module instantiates a client automatically, it is possible to configure all of its settings through the module's public interface. Is there a particular need to control the instantiation?
