Allowing default branches would imply that Jenkins will trigger a devel jobs even when changes are only made to other branches. Instead the validation script could only allow entries with version attributes.

Without a branch name set Jenkins runs the job for every commit to the repo on the branch with the change which is not the intended behavior. Therefore we have to specify a branch explicitly for each repo in the source.yaml file.
Rosdistro has been patched and released to enforce the existence of that attribute: ros-infrastructure/rosdistro@1e247da
The existing source.yaml file has been updated to include the version attribute for every repo: ros/rosdistro@01bd873
