rssowl's Introduction

Note:

Please use Xyrio/RSSOwlnix which is the new place for RSSOwl.

RSSOwl is unmaintained and has several known vulnerabilities. Please do not use it any more.

See #7 and #8 for details about maintenance. Furthermore, RSSOwl does not work with Java 9, but it may still work with Java 8.

Is there a repository of opml files?

I want to find robust rss feeds. I was wondering if there were any popular opml files any where on the web. Is there a repository people use for the opml files?

RSSOwl is pretty much unmaintained

RSSOwl hasn't seen any updates in years. This results in some problems:

  1. At least on Linux, there are major security bugs within RSSOwl. See #7 for details.
  2. RSSOwl really needs to get ported to a more recent version of SWT and the Eclipse platform to support at least some of the now commonly used technologies such as touch devices, HiDPI displays and so on.
  3. There are many known bugs. Just have a look at #6 or the forums for Discussion, Help or Developers.

How do we fix this? or do we discontinue RSSOwl?

Although I am a repository owner to RSSOwl I haven't used it in years any I won't have time to get anywhere near fixing RSSOwl myself. And I think it would be a good idea to stop developing and using RSSOwl in favor of one of the other >100 open source alternatives to RSSOwl.

RSSOwl - All my collected Feeds ( since 2013 ) are lost!

Hello Team,

yesterday was the last day I saw al my collected Feeds in the RSSOwl Program.
On today's start it is asking what I like to do.

Please tell me WHERE my Original Feeds are stored and HOW I can bring them back into the Program.

Thanks a lot and with best regards,
Stefan Schwarz

Request for existing labels to popup while using Assign Labels

I use RSSOwl to keep track of news of various journal sources. I also use the label feature to create various labels to organize the feed. I have numerous labels which makes it difficult to manually go through and click. Instead if I use Assign Labels, the existing labels do not popup when typing, which leads to creation of multiple labels that are similar.
Hence adding a functionality where existing labels popup when we type under Assign Labels

Certain Feeds won't work in RSSOwl!, Why & How To Fix This?

Firstly I know that there isn't a team behind RSSOwl that creates updates for the software since its been in version 2.2.1 since 2013. In my opinion RSSOwl is the only proper RSS Reader out at the moment that looks good and works smoothly, but I can't get all feeds to work with the software although I can get them to work in inferior RSS readers. Why is this and how can I get the software to allow the feeds to work?

Some of the feeds that I have found that don't work in RSSOwl are:

Add Support For NSA Suite B Cryptography Algorithms

Hi,

Please Add Support For NSA Suite B Cryptography Algorithms.

Without this support, secure feeds that use these algorithms will fail to load in RSSOwl.

With the error: "could not generate dh keypair"

Example Feed: https://www.reactos.org/blog/feed

See Bug Fix @ http://bugs.java.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=7044060

See #11

Thanks,

Will

Possible Improvements?

Let me start of by saying that I love RSSOwl and I use it every day and it makes keeping track of lots of different things super easy but I still believe that RSSOwl could be improved even more!. I believe RSSOwl could be improved by trying to implement the following changes/ improvements:

(1.) Filters without Bins
The filter option can be extremely helpful with pages with lots of content but I find that having the filtered content moved into a bin kind of defeats the purpose of the filter since the original feed is stilling loading everything from the page. I think it would be more useful to have the filter in the actual feed and it would only show new stuff that matches the filter instead of loading everything from the original feed and then moving the filter matches to a bin.
Example: http://imgur.com/qQQMahl

(2.) Feed List Customizability
What I mean is that the user would be able to customize things like RSS Icons, Folder Icons, Folder Text & Feed Text. I believe this would be a useful improvement because it would allow the user to organize the feeds better and clearer by being able to have individual coloured folders to separate specific items.
Example: http://imgur.com/oeG8snd

(3.) Feed Compatibility Update
I was also hoping for an update so that RSSOwl could support more RSS Feeds since I do frequently run into issues where RSSOwl says it failed to load the feed title or saying “The Last attempt to load this feed failed. Reason: Received fatal alert: internal_error” yet there is nothing wrong with the feed and loads perfectly for the browser and other RSS software. Some examples that I have that RSSOwl won’t work with:
Example 01: https://www.reddit.com/r/megalinks/.rss
Example 02: https://rarbg.to/rss.php
Example 03: https://jaiminisbox.com/reader/feeds/rss
Example 04: https://www.sallysubs.com/feed/
Example 05: https://feeds.feedburner.com/Torrentfreak

(4.) RSS Feed Automatic Back Up
As far as I know if you want to back up your feed you would have to do it manually by exporting it but say you haven’t backed it up and something happens to the software or the actually machine it would have been useful for the software to automatically back it up every week or month to a specific folder to prevent the loss of the feed.

RSSOwl does NOT work with Java 9

Hi,

Public Service Announcement

RSSOwl does NOT work with Java 9 @ http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

Attempting to run RSSOwl with only Java 9 installed... RSSOwl simply will not run.

The latest working build of Java that RSSOwl works with is:

Java 8 Update 144

Which you can still download from https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp#win

Thankfully, you can run Java 8 and Java 9 side by side, at least for now.

Take Care,

Will

Internal browser on Linux (XULRunner) has many known security issues

On Linux (and maybe on Mac OS X) RSSOwl is using XULRunner 1.9.2.

There are many (probably several hundreds) of known security bugs in XULRunner, which includes most security bugs of firefox since XULRunner 1.9.2 has seen its last release. To get a vague image of the number of bugs, have a look at the CVE database and compare it to the release date of XULRunner 1.9.2 3.6.26, January 31st, 2012. Running XULRunner is not supported by Mozilla any more (Source 1, Source 2). This issue can only be fixed by updating to latest versions of SWT (4.6+) and thus Eclipse platform 4.6+ immediately, because only those are using WebKitGtk+ version 2 with which still gets security bug fixes.

Updating to just using WebKitGtk+ 1.x with SWT 4.x won't fix this issue, since WebKitGtk+ is also old and contains hundreds of known security bugs too and will never be fixed completely because of maintenance burden. WebKitGtk+ 2 support on SWT / Eclipse platform 4.6 works, but it is far from being perfect. Release 4.7 of SWT / Eclipse platform should fix the remaining issues

This issue does not affect Windows builds (I think so at least) since they use the Internet Explorer web rendering engine by default. There might be a similiar issue on Windows too.
