eskom-load-shedding's Introduction

Eskom load shedding schedule viewer

Simple Single-Page App (SPA) to view the Eskom load shedding schedule for a given zone and stage, for a range of supported South African cities. Schedules have been manually transformed into JSON files, which support varying blocks and schedule types (days of the week or days of the month).

The website is built using Vue, Buefy and Bulma, with Yarn as the package manager and Parcel as the bundler. and is hosted on Netlify.

There is also a series of Python scripts, running on an Azure VM, that scrape supported city websites to extract the current load shedding stage (where available).

Recommended IDE Setup

VSCode + Volar (and disable Vetur) + TypeScript Vue Plugin (Volar).

Type Support for .vue Imports in TS

TypeScript cannot handle type information for .vue imports by default, so we replace the tsc CLI with vue-tsc for type checking. In editors, we need TypeScript Vue Plugin (Volar) to make the TypeScript language service aware of .vue types.

If the standalone TypeScript plugin doesn't feel fast enough to you, Volar has also implemented a Take Over Mode that is more performant. You can enable it by the following steps:

  1. Disable the built-in TypeScript Extension
    1. Run Extensions: Show Built-in Extensions from VSCode's command palette
    2. Find TypeScript and JavaScript Language Features, right click and select Disable (Workspace)
  2. Reload the VSCode window by running Developer: Reload Window from the command palette.

eskom-load-shedding's Issues

Collapse Johannesburg blocks

Since Jhb has 4 hour blocks, it might make more sense to collapse them as such, but would need to figure out how to display that in the grid, given blocks are 2 hours apart.
