Sorry, this is not what you want to hear after months of no reply, but I wanted to report I have exactly the same issue.
Here it's on Spark 2.4.7
Getting the impression this is no longer being maintained.

Okay back with (hopefully) better news: Turns out this is a scala problem, not a spark problem. For me, the solution was actually what is mentioned in the README: Use 3.0.0-s_2.11 instead of 3.0.0-s_2.12 (which is for Spark 3). It's mentioned pretty cleary but I still over-read it. Hope that helps. I managed to get it to work in any case.
