There was no strong reason one way or the other. If you want to replace the numerics with floats I think that would be good.

Thanks for the answer ! I feared there would be a compatibility issue or such ...
I will include this modification if I have a pull request in the future, I don't really like floating point conversions getting out of control..

To make numeric work in cobra, I would think all that would be required is
calling float() on the value put into the stoichiometry.

Of course, but the point was to avoid server-side floating-point conversion (no pun intended) when uploading a model, since Numeric more or less lets the choice to postgres.
Float columns work well so far.

Well in any case, as of opencobra/cobrapy@fe3e80f all solvers should work correctly with any numeric datatypes.
