A visual map of active community Mastodon or compatible providers that operate primarily in or are targeted to a locality, region, city, or language.
Onboarding to Mastodon requires a judgement call about which server to join and can cause confusion. The map is intended to showcase existing local service providers with a built-in local membership as a way to inspire confidence in the choice of server.
To be included on the map the service must be:
- Mastodon or a Mastodon fork (other ActivityPub services may become in scope at a later date),
- Open for registration - this directory is to help people find a server to join, server must accept new members. Approval based service is fine,
- Clearly intended (i.e. written in the server description) to serve a particular physical facility (e.g. university), neighbourhood, city, region or country; or a specific language or family of languages that can generally be thought of as being constrained to a particular locale or region,
- HTTPS only
- Reasonably well-populated (over 100 active members)
- Any server that clearly and overtly contravenes the Mastodon Server Covenant (https://joinmastodon.org/covenant). -- please note, public signing of the Mastodon Server Convenant is not required for inclusion
- Any server that has any kind of membership fee or required donation.
- Any server that is consistently unreachable.
Please note: this service is intended to help a specific portion of the Mastodon-curious find a functional, reasonably well-populated server local to to them. Due to the recent (Nov 2022) interest in Mastodon, many new servers are coming online (a good thing!) and hoping this map will help advertise them (not so good). We are not an ad service, we are a guide for the lost. To that end:
- Servers that are very new with unclear geogrpahic context or very few members will be politely excluded for now. An exception is if you are serving a specific town or city, you have more than 50 members, and your server description clearly describes the town or city being served.
