vcsl's Issues

Can't download the library in any way

Hi!

I'm trying to download VSCL, but I'm not able in any way (zip, tar or Dropbox). I could at some point download a 2 Gb file which consisted of the aerophones and cordophones -and I'm not even sure that they were in their complete form -. It always truncates before completing or delivers a partial, 512 Mb file, or something with a seemingly random value. Really weird.

Is there an alternative? I'm very interested in trying out this library...

Thanks in advance!

No included converter or SFZ files

Thank you for generously making these samples freely available.

The README.md file says:

Huge thanks to Peter Eastman for creating a fantastic Python utility that auto-generates SFZ files- it's included as CC0 as part of the download!

I could not find any such utility in the download. If it is not included, perhaps that text could be taken out of the description, to avoid confusion. I believe that the utility is actually available at https://vis.versilstudios.com/assets/pe_sfzpythonautomapper_5-12-2019.zip, and that an alternative folder-to-sf converter is at https://vis.versilstudios.com/sfzconverter.html

Further to that, "SFZ Version" implied to me that there would be included SFZ files. However I found none. If these are just WAV samples, and the user is expected to create their own SFZ files for the samples, perhaps that could be made clearer in the description.

Expose SFZ instruments

I notice the SFZ instruments are still hidden away where few people are ever likely to realize they exist. Exposing them in some more visible way would make the library much more useful for people who just want a set of instruments they can use to create music. Even if you want to keep them on their own branch, there are two simple things that would make them a lot more useful.

  1. Update the README to mention that they exist and how to get them.

  2. Create a Github release from the sfz branch, which will give a one-click way for people to download a set of ready to use instruments.

Do you really need to download everything twice?

It seems cloning the repo pulls down many gigs of samples, but no SFZ files. To get the SFZ files you need to download a release thart contains...... all of those samples again!

If the recommended way of consuming the library is with though git (for ease of update), I guess that means I do a git clone, then download the release, unzip it, manually copy the SFZ files into my git repo, then delete the downloaded release?

Or am I missing something obvious here?

Convert VCSL from WAV to FLAC format

One thing I might do is convert the entire library to FLAC. It's lossless, but compressed so it'll save about 50-90% of the space when downloading, considerably better than ZIP. The disadvantage of course is FLAC is less accessible to people, so any thoughts on this are welcome!

To reduce sample size and ease download access, the project will be converted into FLAC format.

This will require:

  • Batch converting all WAV files to FLAC
  • Updating all existing .SFZ files to use FLAC extension
