Save and quit fails and all progress is lost

This applies to version 1.0.2 from Google Play.
Too often, a save and quit command (^X) will fail to save. The message "Saving game... failed." Will appear and the game will exit. All progress is lost and the new character screen will show up the next time the game is loaded.
Suggested fixes:

1. If save game failed, do not exit. Print the error message but keep the character loaded so that a future save may work and progress is not lost.
2. Painstakingly track down the cause of the problem taking into account all possible Android versions that may contribute to this problem...
3. It looks like the code creates temp files and then Deletes them. If the save failed, do not delete the temp files. Figure out if there's some way to restore the correct save game. Possibly promotes savefile scumming.
