Planning for siduction 2023.1

General Planning

Release schedule

  • How many more releases do we want to / can we do in 2023?
  • Do we want to release one before Plasma 6 arrives?
  • If we want to integrate Timeshift, maybe it's a good idea to do that somewhwn before the one for Plasma 6.

New features:

  • Add Timeshift to package list
  • set it up to do a first image right after install

Evaluate cli installer

Our cli installer needs a closer look regarding features and convenience. Maybe it even needs to be replaced.

Related to #1

Evaluate iwd

test if iwd is ready for prime time with all DEs

Testing KDE Plasma Desktop

Plasma welcome page, maybe useful!

https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-welcome

In the future, next plasma release, after bookworm I guess, there will be the possibility to create a plasma -welcome-app, see link above.

Maybe this could be interesting, we can describe for example how to install media codecs to watch DVDs or Blu-rays or how to set up snapper with a one click option, and and and .......

But first we have to wait until plasma gets updated in debian, the time after bookworm.

Reduce flavor ISOs

Flavors definitely to be made:

  • Plasma
  • xorg
  • nox

Flavors to be discussed:

  • Xfce

Flavors to be thrown out:

  • LXQt
  • LXDE
  • MATE
  • Gnome
  • Cinnamon

nala as alternative for apt command

I have been using nala as a substitute for the apt commands for a couple of weeks now. I think it would be a viable alternative for the apt commands and a unique selling point for us. Of course, apt stays where it is.

PROs:

  • faster: standard 2 connections simultaneously (18 possible) instead of 1 with Debian
  • prettier: colors enable a better overview
  • more info in output (pictures on GitLab)

CONs:

What do you think?

So if we use that "new calamares" we install kde/plasma too!

I don't think that, is an option for us, maybe use that new one for our plasma-iso, but for all the other ISOs we have to decide to use the "old-one" we still use, or find a new installer!

Testing nox

  • GRUB Theme
  • Booting
  • Network working wired & wireless (iwd)
  • Sound working (pipewire)
  • Reboot & Shutdown

Minimal edition

Hi there,
I am proposing for a minimal edition. I installed it, it is running great, but there is so much "bloatware" installed (All those different screencast softwars, user programs (like libreoffice)). I don't need most of that.

I suggest a switch in the installer for default software or minimal software (just the desktop environment).

Thanks!

Release date

We have not talked about a release date yet. As we run a booth at FrOSCon on August 20/21, we could aim at releasing right before that. What do you think? Can it be done?

md5 and sha256 files are wrong on testbuilds

We are linking our builds.date.iso to builds.latest.iso on testbuilds, also the md5 and sha256 files which is wrong, the md5/sha256 file is generated against builds.date.iso and then only linked to the new file, that doesn't work and is totally wrong!
We must generate a new builds.latest.iso.md5/sha256 file and copy this too testbuilds.

Testing xorg desktop

  • GRUB Theme
  • Booting
  • Login Screen
  • Theme Colors
  • Wallpaper
  • Panel & Panel Icons
  • Network working wired & wireless (iwd)
  • Sound working (pipewire)
  • Reboot & Shutdown

ISO Building Instructions

For those people who want to customize the Siduction ISO installer for their own needs, where would we find some basic instructions on how the Siduction team builds their ISO? Looking through the Github projects, the answer is not obvious to me. The reason for the customization is to add or delete packages. I install Siduction on a lot of machines, my post-install script is taking 30-60 minutes to complete, so being able to modify the ISO as I need would be of great use to me.

We need a new workflow how to install IWD

IWD now comes with it own config which we only have to change to our needs.
With the new networkmanager 1.34.0-2 in debian we can remove wpasupplicant during installation, do we want that?

Btrfs-Snapshots with Snapper

This is probably too much work for 2022.1, but as we discussed it before, and I still think it is a good idea for a special interest image, I will put it here, so it is not lost.

Kali Linux, based on Debian, is offering Kali »Unkaputtbar« which does exactly that. A quick glance is on my blog, a thorough walkthrough can be found here

I am sure, borrowing from their implementation would greatly simplify our setup for this.
