This is for the latest version, I can do some test to determine the value for 1.8
I'm not adjusting the maximum distance. You can fork the project & modify it yourself if you'd like, but I'm sticking to vanilla values here.

Ah.
Though, I do believe that the vanilla 1.8.9 entity render distance is greater than 64. Also, you've been back porting other features from the latest version, so perhaps this might be a feature to back port as well?
As I just said, I'm not adjusting the max, meaning I'm not backporting this.

This would not be allowed, should be fairly simple to assume why. You'd be seeing entities outside of the vanilla render distance.

That's understandable.
Would it at least be possible to increase the entity render distance to use the vanilla one?
For example: use vanilla render distance on players but decreased render distance on other entities.

As of 1.6, there are 4 different categories. Global entities, hostile entities, passive entities, and players. All of these are 0-64

Vanilla entity render distance is greater than 64, afaik.
Because, if I disable the custom render distance, it will render entities way outside of the 64 block range

I'm going to necropost this, but according to the Minecraft Wiki, you can set the entity render distance up to 520 blocks.
See: https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Options for more info.

1.8.9 Vanilla does not have any entity distance option

My bad, I only saw the latest comment. I didn't realize there was one above it.
