old-landscape's Issues

Establish criteria for inclusion in the landscape

Establish guidelines for evaluating new entry requests so that the criteria for being included/excluded is explicit and clear. Then:

  • Publish the guidelines
  • Evaluate every current and proposed entry agains those guidelines
  • Create a process for saying "no" so that all requests are treated with dignity.
  • Offer an appeals process

Add EdgeXFoundry as an org

Need section for news and analysis

Organizations, large or very small, that report on or analyze Edge.

For example, https://staceyoniot.com Stacey Higginbotham has said some very important things about Edge and 5G.
If the group think this is right, I'll supply more examples.

I think this would be very useful. I've spent the last few weeks researching Edge and didn't find a good list of information sources. Dave

Weak Criteria

I wonder what your qualification criteria is. In my opinion 90% of companies listed here have nothing to do with edge computing. It is no secret that every business will try to benefit from any new hype and will do anything to put their name in the context. But when somebody endorses those businesses I would highly question credibility of their reports and rather treat them rather as paid marketing than anything meaningful.

In my opinion there are only 3 category to edge computing:

  • manufacturing of gateway devices - there is nothing interesting going here, we are just waiting for manufacturers to get it right, i.e. to come up with devices with proper set of features.
  • connectivity - also not much excitement. I would expect standardization of 4G, LTE, 5G interfaces and sensible plans from wireless network operators, and maybe some standardization on mesh networking.
  • but holy grail of Edge Computing is software that runs on edge devices and uses swarm intelligence, smart clustering, distributed storage and networking and is capable of running on relatively small gateway devices and scale horizontally virtually infinitely using smart algorithms.

So, out of your list some 10% of mentioned companies have anything to do with the above 3 categories.

BTW, I would consider cloud to be irrelevant for edge computing. It has some uses now but it is on its way to be obsoleted by fog computing.

Must reach the majority of the world

Nearly all the entries are from the U.S. and Western Europe. That's about 20% of the Internet. To be valuable, we need to find a way to be more comprehensive.
For example, I just discovered American Movil is installing Edge servers in Brazil.

Add "Tripp Lite" to the landscape- Supply Chain section

Tripp Lite is a manufacturer of a wide variety of power, rack, cooling, and connectivity products used in edge computing as well as expertly configured EdgeReady™ Micro Data Centers that can ship in 3 to 5 days. Tripp Lite products are used in a variety of edge computing applications across the globe. I'd suggest adding Tripp Lite to the "Supply Chain" section.

You can learn more here:

Add Moovweb to 'Traffic/Delivery' section under 'Application Delivery"

I'd like to suggest the inclusion of Moovweb to the 'Traffic/Deliver' section

The Moovweb XDN (experience delivery network) is a modern dynamic website delivery network that allows developers to specify edge logic in JavaScript directly in their application code such as React. The XDN also has a serverless Node.js tier for server-side rendering and other features to enable development of sub-second websites. The network currently powers 1/3 of Americans each month through customers such as United Airlines, Nordstrom, and 1-800-Flowers.com. It should be included in the 'Traffic/Deliver' section under 'APPLICATION DELIVERY' next to Fly and Cloudflare (Workers). See a simple diagram here

Add edge power and cooling initiatives to landscape map

Some community members are working with OCP on power and cooling initiatives, and would like to have them included in the Landscape, such as Immersion Cooling, Liquid Cooling, 48V projects, etc.

Also, iMasons is developing a taxonomy of infrastructure edge and may suggest additions of their own.
