One issue with this is the current way we get out MAC address. It is only compatible with windows afaik but there probably is a more cross platform function.

Windows version launches arp internally to get all mac addresses. if that's not compatible with linux i guess you should look for a different solution?

There is an equivalent command for *nix called "arp-scan". arp-scan --localnet --plain outputs one line per host in the format IP<TAB>MAC address<TAB>Vendor name.
To use that we'd obviously require arp-scan as a runtime dependency (it's not installed by default). The trickier problem is that arp-scan typically requires root access (or the setuid bit).
