Unsupported image object

When I run app.py with no arguments, it returns "list index out of range", and when I run it with the image file path in quotation marks after the command, it returns "Unsupported image object". I tried it with both .jpg and .png files, the standard image files. I'm also running this program on Mac, and I changed the tesseract path in help.txt to the appropriate path. Any help?
