TagSpaces does use a database for storing the tag information. It is saved in a decentralized way, in the name of the file or in a so called sidecar files. Your request will require TagSpaces to go through all the locations and rename file or change sidecar files, which is not feasible.

That's an unfortunate limitation of this setup I didn't consider. Has there been any thought given to using a database rather than sidecars or file renaming?

No, we do not plan to introduce a database in TagSpaces. We see this fact as a key advantage of the application, having a database will limit your tags only to one computer. Once you sync your tagged files or copy them to a USB stick, the tags will disappear.

The database could be stored alongside the files you're syncing--tags spaces can already do this with sidecars (at least on linux, idk about windows).
