  • Cmd+Shift+3: full screen screenshot (saved to Desktop)
  • Cmd+Shift+4: area of screen screenshot (saved to Desktop)
  • Cmd+Shift+4+Space: window screenshot (saved to Desktop)

How to record the screen on your Mac

  • Cmd+Shift+5: open recording interface

Or use QuickTime which also allows recording connected iPhone screen: Record a movie in QuickTime Player on Mac

Cropping

Click the popup with the screenshot thumbnail in the bottom right of the screen after making the screenshot, click the Crop button and move the corners of the white rectangle to adjust the crop. Click Cmd+C to copy to clipboard or click Done to save to Desktop.

iOS

A screenshot is made using volume up and power buttons pressed at the same time. A screen recording is made by adding a screen recording button to the Control Center and then sliding the Control Center down and initiating the recording. To stop the recording, slide Control Center down again and stop the recording. Or use the above macOS iPhone screen recording tip.

watchOS

A screenshot is made using the power button and the digital crown pressed at the same time. It is saved to the iPhone Camera Roll. This needs to be enabled in the Watch app on the phone first.

A screen recording cannot be made on watchOS AFAIK.

Windows

  • PrtScn: full screen screenshot (copied to clipboard)
  • Win+PrtScn: full screen screenshot (saved to Pictures)
  • Alt+PrtScn: window screenshot (copied to clipboard)
  • Win+Alt+R: record window
  • Win+G: open Gamebar with access to existing recordings
  • Win+Shift+S: Snip & Sketch

PowerPoint

PowerPoint has a screen recording functionality built-in. You always have to start up PowerPoint and create a new blank presentation for it to work. Go to the Insert ribbon tab and select Screen Recording. From there either use the UI or these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Win+Shift+A: select screen area recording
  • Win+Shift+F: select full screen recording
  • Win+Shift+U: do not record sound
  • Win+Shift+O: do not record cursor
  • Win+Shift+R: start/pause/resume recording
  • Win+Shift+Q: stop recording

The recording UI will hide unless pinned, to make it show, move the mouse cursor to 0, 0.

After finishing the recording, it will get inserted into the current slide. To save the media file alone, right-click on it and select Save Media As.

Cropping

Use the Snip & Sketch for rectangular, free-form, window or full-screen snip. Or use Microsoft Paint / Paint.NET.

Notes

The Snip & Sketch tool can be configured to start instead of the default PrtScn behavior.
