If DNS server port number in range 1..65535validation for DNS port in Configuration instance fails.
Hi, first of all thanks for the gem! It is really useful. I can't find where I can ask question except here.
I'm not sure how to perform SMTP validation when server is behind load balancer with internal IP only.
Truemail.host_audit always fails because server doesn't have public IP and I can't configure one.
Any suggestions?

I think this might be a follow-up of issue #103. I'm using the following basic configuration:

config.response_timeout = 1After some trial and error, I've found that certains domains have multiple mail servers (more than 15 in some cases; I can DM you some examples if you wish), which, if the connection is blocked, causes wait times of more than 10 seconds.
Looks like the problem is related to how timeouts on SMTP validation are handled: timeouts seem to be checked for each connection to each mail server; this means, if we have configured a timeout of 1 second, and there are 15 mail servers, and all of them fail to check if the port is open, it will take 15 seconds, which is way too much time to validate an email on a web application.
I've tried to do a basic timeout check on my application code, but nested timeouts do not work:

In a situation when we have unresolvable primary MX record but healthy backup MX records
MX 0 unresolvable.example.com.
MX 10 healthy1.example.com.
MX 20 healthy2.example.com.
validator won't be able to find backup records as a loop in mx_records method will stop on the first Resolv::ResolvError.
How we can communicate truemail with in python scripts (or other lanaguge like PHP) ?

Hi! I really like this library, but I'm wondering if there is any drawback to using the final SMTP validation. Is it possible that the my email domain (from verifier_email) might get an increase in its spam score since the verification sends a real SMTP request for each verified email address on behalf of it?
What do you think about making SMTP validation optional and also disabling it by default if verifier_email is not set?

The documentation states the following for connection_timeout and response_timeout configuration options:
Optional parameter. Connection timeout is equal to 2 ms by default.
Optional parameter. A SMTP server response timeout is equal to 2 ms by default.
I understand that timeouts are specified in milliseconds. However, after taking a look at the source code, it seems to me that Timeout.timeout is used to handle timeouts, which uses seconds.
Is the documentation wrong, or should timeouts be handled on milliseconds rather than seconds?

There is no timeout configuration for DNS resolver when MX checks are done, so if there is a domain with bad DNS being checked then it could take up to 75 seconds before DNS timeouts which can be unacceptable, especially within web application context. There is also seems to be no rescue for DNS resolver timeouts.
If a domain has a single MX record with priority 0 and value of "." (single dot) then it means that this domain doesn't accept any emails and shouldn't be used in email addresses.
Domain names are case insensitive, e.g. example.com, EXAMPLE.COM and examPLE.Com should all be treated as the same domain, but this code currently allows only lowercase domain names and rejects uppercase or mixed-case as invalid.

After some research I figured out before Ruby 3 the Net::SMTP#start method's definition looks like this:

truemail to the latest version[BUG] Ruby 3.0 changes the handling of SSL certificate verification which will cause failures when the certificate names don't match the IP addresses.
The interface for the Net::SMTP start method changed in 3.0 to
start(address, port = nil, helo: 'localhost', user: nil, secret: nil, authtype: nil, tls_verify: true, tls_hostname: nil) { |smtp| ... }The old method continues to be supported, but it looks like they changed to enable tls_verify by default. Under the 2.7 library, there's no problem connecting to gmail.com, but from 3.0 you get a connection error stating that there's a certificate error.
My feeling is that SSL errors are irrelevant for email verification, so tls_verify should always be off, and a quick way to fix this is to add the tls_verify: false option to the SMTP start method, although you would need to check the library version and only do this for versions 3.0+.
When MX records are found they should be resolved too and each MX should resolve into at least one A or AAAA record. If there is no A or AAAA records found for all MX records then MX checks should fail. See RFC 5321 Section 5 for details.

Multiple MX recorods can point to one mailserver DNS name, MX doesn't provide IP address directly, it provides the NAME of the mailserver. Then separate A/AAAA record lookup provides the IP address. So in this case we can get collection with not unique ip-adresses of mail servers. If reduce total count of mail_servers we can reduce email validation time. So removing duplicates make sence. @AlexeyDemidov, what do you think about this improvement?
Cannot use blacklist feature. I have an existing email blacklist in a lib class which I include via require_relative. Getting the blacklist into the config when Rails starts is not the issue, the issue is that Truemail rejects the blacklist array as invalid.
There are over 3k indices in the array, I'm wondering if I might be hitting an upper-limit.

Net::SMTP#start already sends a HELO command and uses localhost if no domain is provided as an argument. This creates several problems:
Using localhost in HELO commands creates issues with some mail servers using certain anti-spam services. As a result these servers close the connection immediately, so we're unable to verify if the address is valid. This is resolved by passing the configured verifier domain to Net::SMTP#start.
Some mail servers complain when we send an explicit HELO command later and close the connection after receiving the second HELO. Since we've already sent a HELO during Net::SMTP#start, this is fixed by removing the explicit HELO command.

Error code 550 followed by user|account doesn't cover all possible error response which indicate that email doesn't exist. See an example of SMTP error parsing for userunknown status.
As the MX records are not resolved to IPs but used as is, it can lead to unexpected results during MX checks. For example, if MX record is multihomed and resolves into multiple A/AAAA records then there is some probability that check_port and run will run against different IPs.
When we have multi-homed MX record(s) which resolves into multiple A records eg.
@ IN MX 0 mail.example.com.
mail.example.com. IN A 192.168.100.1
mail.example.com. IN A 192.168.100.2
Only a single IP address will be checked as Resolv.getaddress is used for MX hosts name resolution instead of Resolv.getaddresses.

I was reading through the documentation and saw "Verifier domain should refer to verifier host IP address" can you please elaborate on this? Does this mean we need a root A record on the domain to point to ip address? Or is this something else?
Also, what about subdomains:
I.e a.mail.com, b.mail.com can each point to separate IP addresses with different emails and be used for verification without causing the whole domain to be blacklisted if one get's blacklisted?

According to RFC 5321 Section 5 if there are no MX records found then if A record for the domain exists it should be treated as an implicit MX record with a preference 0.
Default REGEX_EMAIL_PATTERN for local part of email address allows only very limited set of characters and rejects many valid email addresses. The most common example is + sign which is commonly used for sub-addressing, but local part of email address can include much wider range of printable characters, e.g. !#$%&'*+-/=?^_{|}~. At the same time default regex allows local part of address to start with a dot .` which is prohibited by the standard. There is also issue that quoting of local part is unsupported by the default regex. Please see RFC 5322, sec. 3.4.1 for detailed email address specification.

In order to make Truemail work in some restricted environments (especially where the /etc/resolv.conf file cannot be modified), it would be great that the Resolv::DNS.new configuration could be defined in the Truemail.configuration .

I understand that a lot of classes net-smtp, digest, and others have been moved from builtin classes to gems in Ruby 3. As a result of that truemail now requires net-smtp as a dependency, which in turn requires digest as a dependency. So when loading truemail v2.6+ on an app that does not use ruby 3, there's now warnings during load because digest (that declares constants) is loaded twice, both from the digest gem and using the builtin class in ruby 2.
Ideally, net-smtp should only be a dependency of truemail when running ruby 3 but I'm not sure if it's possible to specify dependencies like that?

SMTP checks are currently incorrectly run against all MX servers found while it should stop on the first successful RCPT TO. It should try the next MX only if the current MX failed with temporary error (connection timeout or refused, 4xx error). If the current MX returned 5xx error for any command (not only RCPT TO) then other MXs should not be attempted and validation should fail.
General question - hosting this AWS/EC2 - some domains block my IP for SMTP validation type. For example Outlook.com

Ability to use MxBlacklist validation. This validation layer should provide checking mail servers with predefined blacklisted IP addresses list and can be used as a part of DEA (disposable email address) validations.
"gmail.con" is a common typo in email addresses. The domain lacks a MX record but has an A record. I would desire MX validation to return false but it succeeds. Perhaps there's a reason to accept the A record I'm not understanding. Thanks.

It's a little tricky to explain but..
Lets say I have a bad email address which upon sending an email to it - my IP address will be blacklisted, since it's a spam trap email.
And I check it with

Will by only testing it - my IP address will be blacklisted? as if I were to send the mail itself?
Does using Truemail to test the bad email address is essentially the same as sending it?
To my (very poor) understanding, Truemail basically simulates email sending. Doesn't that count the same as actually sending the mail? 'blacklist entering lists' wise?

Took me a while to track down why my Validator was failing and seems somewhat unexpected result.
As verifier_domain is used as HELO/EHLO argument during SMTP session it has much stricter requirements than the documentation implies and default value derived from verifier_domain can cause failure to establish SMTP session. By RFC 5321 HELO/EHLO argument should contain FQDN of the server which initiated SMTP session, and many SMTP servers implement strict HELO checks where they check that IP which initiated connection has PTR record which matches FQDN presented in HELO. So, if this check is run on a server with IP 1.2.3.4 which has PTR record 1-2-3-4.hosterdomain.com then HELO argument should be 1-2-3-4.hosterdomain.com and also you need to make sure that 1-2-3-4.hosterdomain.com resolves into 1.2.3.4

Hi there, this gem looks really interesting and useful, thanks for open sourcing it! I was wondering if there is a way to check for anonymous email addresses? It might be useful for some projects to know whether someone is signing up with an email address created at an anonymous email provider (e.g. https://www.mailinator.com)
If the domain for MX checks returns a CNAME when a request for MX records will return empty results. According to RFC 5321 Section 5 "If a CNAME record is found, the resulting name is processed as if it were the initial name".
truemail to the latest versionThis feature depends on issue #108. Implement ability to use fail fast behaviour for SMTP validation layer. It should be a configurable and not required option like in example below:
