Option for improve scattering algorithm

Just picking up a comment on your presentation regarding the method for scattering blocks on a surface. It sounded like you had a few options you were exploring, but one that might be of interest is using a spiralled form of circle packing. When I last used this, it was pretty good at being fast while being able to accomodate different sizes/spaces relatively nicely. It is 2D though, so the projection back on to the surface becomes less clean when working with a surface that has steep moments.
