obtain ethical clearance: IISc & St. Johns

Ethical Clearance

Approval from both the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and St. John's Medical College Ethics Committees is mandatory for the research activities within the project. We submitted a comprehensive document outlining the project and data collection requisites. After several rounds of review, the ethics committee granted their final approval, permitting us to record subject data.

pnoi-data recording protocol: latest

0. Setup pnoi recording table

  • place zoom H6 microphone (check for batteries)
  • wear eko stethoscope (check if charged)
  • connect with eko app (check internet speed)

1. Introduction and Consent

  • Consent Form: Link
  • To provide the subject information on the project. The data they are going to provide, and how it will be utilized for the study.

2. Subject metadata

  • Collect subject’s metadata: Spirometry PFT reports, biodata, questionnaire on the pnoistor app. pnoistor.web.app

3. Breathing instruction

  • As per the protocol for breathing maneuvers [discussed in next section] for capturing the vocal breath sounds and lung breath sounds. It will be consistent among all the subjects.

4. Brief Breathing Practice

  • Conduct a short practice session for breathing and correct any errors
  • It is found to minimize errors during the recording process.

5. Turn On the microphone & record (Very important!)

  • The microphone (Zoom H6) will be continuously recording for the entire breath recording session.
  • Details on the synchronization are discussed in a later section.

6. Auscultation recording with digital stethoscope

  • The auscultation sound is recorded separately with a label for each location on the posterior chest using a digital stethoscope (Littmann CORE).

7. Start recording auscultation following the location order:

  • Order of recording: LU -> RU -> LL -> RL
  • The auscultation recording is synchronized with the vocal breath recording using the synchronization protocol [synchronization discussed in a later section]

8. Repeat the Breathing procedure for all 4 locations

  • Record the subject while the subject performs the breathing procedure as per the protocol, at each location making sure the audio is labeled correctly.

9. Organize Audio data with the metadata

  • Export audio data from the microphone (Zoom H6) onto the PC
  • Download the auscultation audio file from the Eko dashboard
  • Upload to cloud storage safely and organize data through Pnoistor web app: pnoistor.web.app

10. Repeat

  • From step 3 for the same subject (patient) after the inhaler
  • From step 1 for the next subject

pnoi-data recording: protocol

Data recording protocol

Pnoi-data encompasses recorded breath sounds from both the mouth and posterior chest along with vital metadata, making it a pivotal project resource. It is imperative to diligently manage crucial aspects of data recording to ensure the project's success and the integrity of this dataset for building an AI model

  • Consistency and Reproducibility: Ensure that data collection methods are standardized and consistent across all subjects, minimizing variations and enhancing the reproducibility of results.

  • Data Privacy and Ethics: Implement stringent measures to protect the privacy and ethical rights of the participants, including informed consent and secure data handling procedures.

  • Accuracy and Quality: Maintain high data accuracy and quality by specifying recording settings, calibration, and equipment requirements, ensuring that the captured data is reliable and informative.

  • Data Security: Establish robust data security practices to safeguard sensitive medical information and comply with relevant regulations and standards.

  • Ease of Use: Design the protocol to be user-friendly, enabling both healthcare professionals and patients to comfortably perform data collection procedures, minimize errors, and ensure efficient data acquisition.

The recording protocol is documented in #1 pnoi-data recording protocol: latest
