Chrome extension requires the following inputs:

1. Slack API key

Click GET SLACK API KEY to install the slack app and generate your Slack API key.

Slack API key starts with xoxp-

Make sure to install the slack app to the correct workspace, where you want your status to be automatically updated. Select the workspace on top right corner before clicking "Allow".

See FAQs for more help.

2. Choose meeting status text

This will be the text displayed in your slack status, during the meeting. Default text is On a meet call • Reply may be delayed.

3. Choose meeting status emoji

This will be the emoji displayed in your slack status, during the meeting. Default emoji is 📞.

Custom emojis available in your slack workspace are supported. They must be directly copy pasted from slack in text format, with both the colons like :bowtie:. Read more in this FAQ.

FAQs

I am unable to install the slack app

Try re-installing. Make sure you are logged in to the right slack workspace.

Slack app installation needs admin permission

Your slack workspace admin has made it mandatory to take their approval before installing any app to the workspace. Request them to approve your request by sending a note during the installation process.

You can assure them that this app is safe and does not collect or store any data. See privacy policy.

I am unable to generate Slack API key

Try re-installing the slack app and make sure you click allow during the installation.

Slack status is not updating

  1. Check if you have actually pasted the Slack API key. Generate and paste again, if in doubt.
  2. Check if you have installed the slack app to the correct workspace, where you want your status to be automatically updated. Select the workspace on top right corner before clicking "Allow".
  3. Try a different emoji.
  4. Check status emoji format, if you are using a custom slack emoji. will work whereas :smile or smile: will not work. To prevent confusion, copy paste the emoji directly from a slack chat.
  5. The custom emoji used is not available in your slack workspace. Use only those emojis that are available in your slack workspace.

Extension does not work sometimes

Refreshing the meeting page should bring the extension back. Status updates may not work if you join super short meetings (less than a min approx), in a back to back fashion.

I want to uninstall this extension and slack app

  1. Unistall slack app first, by using the Revoke Slack API key available within the extension.
  2. Right click on the extension icon and remove the extension.

Privacy policy

This extension or the slack app do not store any keys or data in any form. All data is stored locally inside chrome browser. Slack status API calls are made directly to Slack servers and no intermediate servers are used.

google-meet-slack-integration's Issues

Set back the previous emoji status (on reset)

First issue 🎉

Hello!

I have a (custom) emoji as a status when I'm not in a meeting and when the extension resets my status, my previous emoji is reset too 😞
It should be great if the extension can get user status before setting the new one, then set the status in cache and reset the status with the stored cached status when leaving a meeting.

Btw, what a great extension 😱 💪🏻 Thanks for it!

Slack status not updating

I am using a Mac, Google Chrome. I installed the chrome extension using the instructions provided. Generated a key, added to the extension. I have been in a Google Meet for about 10 minutes with no status change. I tried once by creating and joining an instant meeting, and again by scheduling a meeting. I followed the remediation steps and copied an emoji from Slack to the extension. Still no status update in Slack.

Status cleared when sharing screen

Hello again!

I have an issue when I start my screen share.
The status is cleared, but the listeners seem to be still active.

Here are the worker logs when I start the screen share:

Successfully intercepted network request. Clearing slack status
background.js:70 Removing meeting exit listener
background.js:144 Fetch finished loading: POST "https://slack.com/api/users.profile.set".
(anonymous) @ background.js:144
background.js:146 Slack status altered
background.js:19 Registering query tabs listener
background.js:22 Registering meeting exit listener

When I start a screen share, there is a request to https://meet.google.com/$rpc/google.rtc.meetings.v1.MeetingDeviceService/CreateMeetingDevice, I think if you add this to the join listener URLs filter, it should remove the Slack status, but will put it back just after.
It's not the best solution, but I can't find the network call that triggers the exit listener.

Thanks!

Option to deactivate the slack API key right within the extension

Currently, the only way to deactivate the key is by clicking the link in the email sent by slack, during installation.

  • Low trust and concern about deactivating the key, if compromised
  • There is no info within the extension about the key and its security
  • Nudge on where to find help is needed, when the extension scales
