A cross-platform command line prompt that provides syntax highlighting, autocompletion, history and more! It's Console.ReadLine() on steroids.

Features

• User Experience (UX) features:
  • Syntax highlighting support via ANSI escape sequences. Supports both the terminal color palette and full RGB colors.
  • Autocompletion menu, with extended documentation tooltips and overload menus.
  • Multi-line input with word-wrapping
  • Word-wrapping
  • History navigation, optionally persistent across sessions, with history filtering (similar to PSReadLine's HistorySearchBackward).

  • Fast rendering—PrettyPrompt only renders the diff of what changed, so the screen doesn't flicker as text is redrawn.

Installation

PrettyPrompt can be installed from nuget by running the following command:

dotnet add package PrettyPrompt

Usage

A simple read-eval-print-loop looks like this:

The Prompt constructor takes optional configuration options for enabling syntax highlighting, autocompletion, and soft-newline configuration. For a more complete example, see the project in the examples directory. If you have the dotnet example global tool installed, run the following command in the repository root:

Building from source

This application targets modern .NET (i.e. not .NET Framework), and can be built with either Visual Studio or the normal dotnet build command line tool.

Ctrl+V paste adds extra EOLs between lines

Missing part of border for longer completion item's documentation

UTF8 output encoding + emoji problem

After setting up output encoding:

Console.OutputEncoding = Encoding.UTF8;

Emoji characters are moving cursor "too fast":

Assert failure (move up after scroll down)

Create a new line with Shift+Enter, resize the window to have only one row and "not many" columns. Press UpArrow. There will be a negative row index.
Simpler repro: Scroll down. Press Up.

Immediate auto-reopen of completion list after item insertion by non-control character

E.g. in CSharpRepl we'll want to have '.' character to be completion-item inserting. But after this insertion we want to immediately reevaluate the completion list trigger and if valid open a new completion list.

Completion list not visible after deleting (Backspace) non-control character which triggered it before and writing it again

In C# that means following:

1. Write DateTime.
2. Completion list is correctly shown.
3. Press Backspace.
4. Press Dot again.
5. Completion list should be visible but it's not.

Make configurable when completion item should be inserted

Now it's hardcoded in CompletionPane.OnKeyDown

Incorrect completion insertion when it's not triggered from end of word

Setting up character key (e.g. '.', '(', ...) as "commitCompletion" key binding should not swallow character itself

Set up key binding:

PromptConfiguration - RGB in default or not?

Should we use RGB AnsiColors for default values in PromptConfiguration or not?

If not then we could add optional bool allowRgbDefaults in its ctor. Then there would be two default value sets - one nonRGB (ugly) and one nicer. But then there is question if allowRgbDefaults should be optional and if so what default value it should have :)

Redraw when window size is changed

Paste abc by Ctrl+V. Pressing Ctrl+Z will remove abc - that's correct.

Paste abc by right click Pressing Ctrl+Z will remove abc one character after another (abc -> ab -> a -> '').

Do not filter out non-matching completion items (only prioritize them)

'Non-matching' pattern and completion list selected item

When the pattern does not match any completion item, the completion list should have no item selected.
Although it should be possible to select some item by Up/Down arrows. Further writing to non-matching pattern after explicit selection should again deselect current item in the list.
All of this should be somehow visually presented in the completion list (probably by removing the selection symbol '>').

Completions for arguments and options

First, great project! Exactly what I needed right now.

I just started developing a tool based on System.CommandLine and got PrettyPrompt working. I'm using Command classes with sub-commands (command.AddCommand(subCommand)).

The tool can execute commands directly with tool command1 arg1 --option1 234 or just start tool which starts the REPL with PrettyPrompt.

I created my own completion which just uses the rootCommand to identify which command you are typing. I would like to have completion with arguments, where the ReplacementText is the actual typed text, but the DisplayText is the name of the argument. E.g.

I got this working for letters, but not for numbers.

It seems that CompletionCallback isn't called for numbers or other characters, only letters. It seems to be by design, what is the motivation for that? Options are in the format --option1 and argument can be anything.

I'd like CompletionCallback to be called for every "word", no matter what it starts with. That way I can decide whether there should be any completions or not.

(I'm not sure if what I'm trying to do will actually work (for more complex commands with more than 1 argument), but I would like to try it out)

Cannot fully see the suggestion box

When i tried to use suggestion box, i got this:

Cannot scroll to the end and see the suggestions fully. I am using Powershell 7 there.

Completion pane should not open when selection is active

Write apple. and select e. from left to right (from right to left it works correctly).

Trigger completion by Ctrl+Space. In Debug it fails on multiple asserts.

We intentionally do not support showing the completion list while selection is active.

I would move codePane.Selection is null check from CompletionPane.OnKeyDown directly to CompletionPane.Open method (it's called one more time in CompletionPane.OnKeyUp where the check is missing).

I'm curious is there (or could there be) any support on the text selection and cut-copy-paste operations with keyboard shortcuts, like in PowerShell?

Automatic scroll to cursor when writing

When I scroll down so the cursor is out of the window and start typing, window should scroll back to the cursor.

Problem here is that Console.SetWindowPosition and Console.WindowTop setter are only supported on Windows 😕.

Now we allocate an empty space under the current line for displaying the completion list and its items descriptions.

We could solve this space wasting by dynamically moving the completion list upwards when it does not have space below the current line. When we have enough space below the behavior would be the same as today.
So it would look something like this:

Possibly it could be configurable but not sure if someone would want to fall back to old behavior.

Make completion items filtering customizable

This is already a problem in the current version of PrettyPrompt referenced by CSharpRepl.
Start writing word present in completion list but end it so it's not there.
E.g. in fruit app write appex and trigger the completion list with Ctrl+Space. Space will be inserted but shouldn't be.

Change behavior of Left/Right arrow with completion list open

The left arrow now closes the completion list and the right arrow invokes insertion of the selected item.

I would much prefer VS behavior:

Paste abcd, press Ctrl+Z -> abcd is deleted. Thats ok.

Paste abcd again, press Ctrl+Z -> nothing happens, press Ctrl+Z again -> abcd is deleted.

Paste abcd, now it's necessary to press Ctrl+Z 3x to get rid of abcd.

...

Every subsequent paste increases the number of necessary Ctrl+Z presses to revert the paste.

'Non-matching' completion item should not be inserted

CompletionCallback trigger

Thanks for providing such a great project, it really makes CLI apps more engaging for users.

I'm working on an app that I'd like to have interact with the local filesystem for saving and reading files, e.g: load /path/to/file.txt or save C:\path\to\file.txt, etc.

The issue I've come across is that the CompletionCallback on the prompt only seems to be triggered on the first character after a whitespace, or on specific keystrokes whilst "midsentence" (such as ( and .).

In my case, If a user types load c, I could assume they mean C:\ and provide a top-level directory enumeration.

They can continue typing to filter that autocomplete list.

But after they've selected a top-level directory and typed another \ (or / depending on OS), I'd like the callback to trigger again so I can provide another enumeration for the directory they selected.

I think it would be nice to expose the option somewhere for the developer to define the conditions under which the callback delegate is called.

Arrow keys history also counts empty lines

When i tried to use up arrow keys to display the first line again in this example, i need to press it 8 times so it seems like it also counts on the empty lines. Is this intended? Thanks.
