wafflejs.github.io's Issues

Checklist: Sept 28–Oct 4

Sponsorship

Sales & Promotion

  • Sell 80 of 100 regular tickets
  • Get 10 of 10 people on the student waitlist
  • Get speakers to help promote (@billyroh)
  • Get friends and acquaintances to buy tickets
  • Get Opendoor to buy a bunch of tickets and distribute them (@billyroh)
  • Go to other meetups and get people to come to WaffleJS

Odds & Ends

  • A/V dry run
  • Update waffle order?
  • Wireless mics (@visnup)

Sponsorship Package

What's WaffleJS?
It's a monthly meetup with tech, waffles, and karaoke. We host four ten-minute talks and have open karaoke at the end. Learn more.

How much?
$500.

Who else has sponsored so far?
Opendoor, Particle, and Crunchyroll.

How many sessions have you had?
Our first session was in August 2015 and we meet monthly. See our past events here: August, September

How many attendees are there?
The October session will have around 150 people. Past attendees have been developers from established companies (Google, Square, Dropbox) as well as folks from smaller startups.

What do I get?

  • A minute of stage time to pitch your company. (May we suggest haikus, interpretive dancing, or freestyle underwater basketweaving?)
  • 2 tickets for people at your company.
  • Place to put stickers and swag on the check-in desk.
  • Featured in the emails to the attendees.
  • Shown on wafflejs.com.

Where does the money go?
The money covers the cost of the venue, labour, and equipment. Any profit we make will be donated to Girls Who Code.

How can I participate?
Send us a message at [email protected].

Add transition time to the schedule

I noticed that you have the schedule going from 7:40 to 7:50 and 10 minute long talks. There is always some slack time required for the previous speakers to get off of stage and the new speaker to get on and set up. I recommend adding at least 5 minutes between each event, especially if you're going to have the minute by minute schedule up on the site.

emcee, a master of ceremonies

I'm willing to give the hosting a shot, but I'm no @jed nor @brianloveswords. anyone know of a similar personality in the bay area?? this is a dangerous issue as it could be a touchy subject if I personally veto someone here... but, if @maxogden were still in town, I'd love his style. @isaacs is on my short list, but you know, time commitments.

karaoke interludes

ok, for the first meetup, I want to set the tone by doing live music accompaniment to js/tech people singing covers/karaoke. I have about a month to try to pull this off (going to also assume this public issue doesn't ruin the surprise since people don't have enough time to go rummaging around on github).

if anyone knows of people who'll be in town and want to rock the mic to sing their karaoke jam, let me know.

Oakland (venue)

we want to bridge the two sides of the bay. it's an ongoing suckiness that there are SF people and Oakland people. any and all ideas about how to bring the two together and/or if we should do some events in Oakland can go here.

also, this is not high priority right now (we're focusing on SF for the first couple of meetups), but wanted to get the discussion started now.

possibilities

  • new parkway theatre
  • @mikeal's warehouse

How do I submit a performance?
You can either comment on this issue or [send us an email](mailto:[email protected]?subject=Performance Submission).

How long should my performance be?
It should be <6 min long, so no Hotel California please!

Do I need to be a good singer?
Nope. You just need to be enthusiastic and give us LIFE.

A description of what you'll be performing and what kind of equipment you'll need.

bus 🚎

Idea for a bridging event for SF and East Bay: put everyone on a bus and pick up from both SF and Oakland. Then travel back and forth on the bay bridge and give talks. Or maybe stop on Treasure Island.

Hopefully, the symbolism is heavy handed.

Speaker Bios

Cole Willsea
Cole is an artist from the bay area whose medium is JavaScript. But he prefers to use the term 'web developer' to describe himself, because that is what Spiderman is. Cole asked me to tell you all that he is really close to the metal and that you should follow him on twitter.

Amy Wibowo
Amy Wibowo is an engineer and the author of bubblesort zines, zines that explain computer science concepts with drawings and stories.

Matt Baker
Matt Baker is an engineer on the developer infrastructure team at Airbnb.

Julia Nguyen
Julia Nguyen is a developer, writer, and speaker from Toronto. She's involved in the Women in CS committee at the University of Waterloo, Write/Speak/Code, and Prompt, a mental health in tech organization. She not secretly wishes she was in a husky puppy pen in Russia.

Myles Borins
Myles is a musician, artist, developer and inventor. He spends his days hacking on node.js for IBM. He sometimes makes art… he should probably do more of that.

Amber Feng
Amber works at Stripe, and her hobby is having hobbies. Her current hobby (and moonlight semi-profession), is building an RPG!

Seth Thompson

September Call for Speakers

We're looking for speakers for our meetup!

mind blown

How do I submit a talk?
You can either comment on this issue or [send us an email](mailto:[email protected]?subject=Talk Submission).

When and where will it be?
When: Wednesday, September 2 from 7 to 10 PM.
Where: Soma StrEat Food Park

What should I talk about?
Something you do outside of work. It doesn't have to be tech-related, but it'd be nice!

Do I need to be an expert to talk?
Nope. This meetup is supposed to be fun and casual, so we want everyone to participate. We especially encourage people of underrepresented groups to apply.

We'll have a TV and a mic for you to use. Let us know if you need any fancy adapters (we'll have some Apple ones).

Processify our talk selection process

We end up selecting talks based on consensus of the organizers after going through all the proposals we've seen either on GitHub or email for the current months and past months. Our current process is haphazard at best. It's also likely unclear what the selection process is from the outside since there barely is a process on the inside.

We should figure out a better process and if not democratize it, at least publicize it. It should address:

  • take into account all proposals, new and old
  • leave some control to the organizers to help guide the meetup
  • don't let proposals fall through the cracks
  • give constructive feedback to the proposer
  • allow transparency(?), balancing the privacy of the proposals we get via email

This is meant as a discussion topic more than a solution right now.

mebeh too much jayhess?

The current site is built with react. I had a blast going through the source and it is super elegant.

One problem, if you visit the site with jayhess turned off you get a big ole blank screen. WOMP WOMP

I know that react has some ability to do server side static rendering, and since the site does not have dynamic content it may make sense to statically generate the payload.

I tried visiting the site with lynx and was served the markdown :S. I do not believe that the jayhess client rendering will effect screen readers, but I have not checked yet.

TLDR; maybe statically generate payload?

sponsors

got a verbal ok from Opendoor for a $500 sponsorship for the first event. and that probably has a little wiggle room too, so if we go over I won't get into trouble.

venue

criteria for a decision

  • engenders creativity
    • non-corporate (no grand lobbies and elevators, no NDAs, no security guards with sign in sheets): this rules out most start-ups and co-working spaces.
    • hopefully not alcohol-first (read: straight up bar), but could be bar + open space or bar + art gallery, and really not too finicky on that point.
      • "i think alcohol is fine. the trick is to find somewhere with beer that's good and therefore expensive enough to promote moderation."
  • can be reserved consistently every month on the same weekday for the near- to medium-term
  • in SF (Oakland venue discussion in #11)
  • easy to reach by public transit (for anyone coming from east bay)
  • can hold ~90 semi-comfortably (only planning on 50 for the inaugural event)

possibilities to contact

@visnup will call through this list and add notes as I go.

BART 🚅

Similar to #5, but maybe even more logistically a nightmare. Meet at certain BART stations and hold talks on BART platforms. or possibly within BART cars. Very important to not inconvenience any commuters though.
