After the normal installation, along with the configuration and everything else, I've been noticing that the network ends up dropping around 30 or 15 minutes of use, it's a quick drop that comes back in at least 10 seconds. But I wanted to know what could be causing this, I don't know if it could be DHCP or something else.
Any idea?
I would leave a replay to your comment, but I'm afraid you wouldn't see it. I know issue is not the ideal place for communication but I've got no other options. Anyway, I'd like to propose a project where we compose, record and mix everything on FreeBSD. If you're up to it, can you please send me an email (it's on my website) so we can arrange something? I'm sure we can find some common ground :o)
I thought to give this a try and after doing a fresh 13.1 install on a spare SSD, I proceeded to run your script.
Everything seemed ok until I noticed that it started compiling things like libgettext from the ports tree even though a package is available. From there on, it only got worse when I saw it start compiling the entire Qt5. Seriously?!
I thought it would be done fast but after 1 hr I gave up and stopped the compilation. This is on a dual Xeon with 16 cores by the way and Nvidia GTX Titan.
Suffice to say I restarted the script without the "creative suite" where it stopped and after a reboot, the system got stuck on the FreeBSD splash screen and wouldn't go any further.
This is a valiant effort, but it needs more polish.
Hi @Wamphyre,
I'm on a VM on proxmox VE, playing with FreeBSD. I successully installed FreeBSD and GostBSD, today looking your project I tried to install it, and:
sudo git clone https://github.com/Wamphyre/BSD-XFCE && sh BSD-XFCE/xfce_desktop.sh
All went OK without errors, but when I restarted I had this
That I can do to overpass?
perhaps add chmod to copy-pasteable section of README?
The installation process completes successfully, but X never starts.
hal has been removed for a long time.
please see https://www.freshports.org/sysutils/hal.
There is no need to use sysrc hald_enable="YES"
.
https://github.com/Wamphyre/BSD-XFCE/blob/main/xfce_desktop.sh line 53.
I want test this on VM on ESXi and then move to desktop
which option I must edit in config script , do not use nvidia card and xorg use default driver?
After deploying xfce_desktop.sh and rebooting.
The GUI login page shows up.
But unable to login.
Hello @Wamphyre
I get it in your README the disclaimer "No AMD/Intel support for now". But it would be great if Intel GPUs will be included in the future so I can try it on my Intel machines, both laptop and NUC. I have Intel Mesa integrated btw. I looked at the install script and in the compile section how about changing the nvidia instances to drm-kmod, is it as simple as that or more complicated? I'm just new to FreeBSD being a long time Linux distro hopper myself. In any case I love to hear your thoughts. I'm trying to transition to FreeBSD and somehow I'm successful since I got it working in my Thinkpad laptop and also as Vbox guest. Keep up the good work sir 👍
When someone wants to modify or remove /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf
he should create a new file /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf
instead. That's said by header of the file /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf
. This project modifies mentioned file here
Official FreeBSD handbook: https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/ports/#quarterly-latest-branch
There is also discussion about it on unix.stackexchange, see:
I could try to fix it.
Great job @Wamphyre!!
Would like to know if you have plans for adding a Linux version, if not I'd like to give it a shot.
Do you have any steps/pointers?
xfce_desktop.sh
script uses portsnap
Line 24 in 6973cdf
portsnap
can not be found on fresh installation FreeBSD 14.I faced the same boot issues using the script on FreeBSD 14 with ZFS. What adjustments need to be made to the script to properly support booting on ZFS?
Fresh install of FreeBSD, with pkg install of doas
, and git
. Also with a user paul
added to wheel
Reboot confirmed as working - can SSH into paul. Can also login and do things from non-ssh console.
So with nothing else, installed I do:
git clone https://github.com/Wamphyre/BSD-XFCE && sh BSD-XFCE/xfce_desktop.sh
# and answer all the questions posed in default ways
sh BSD-XFCE/intel_gpu_install.sh
Then I reboot, then I see:
Rebooting subsequent times gets to the same spot. I repeated everythng (reformat drive, install FreeBSD14 from scratch, add paul, git, doas, go back into the cloned repo for BSD-XFCE, all the other steps ... and get right back to the error of the attached screenshot
