Error importing outside of current folder

When trying to import something that's not on the node_modules/ or notebooks/ folder, following error arrises:

import { IERC20 } from '../typechained'

File 'PATH/TO/FILE' is not under 'rootDir' 'PATH/TO/FILE'. 'rootDir' is expected to contain all source files.

Even though tsconfig.json includes the folder, or the rootPath is set to the root of the repository.
The config file seems to have no effect at all.

Workaround is to create a symbolic link inside node_modules:

cd node_modules/
ln -s ../typechained @typechained

import { IERC20 } from '@typechained'
