ama's Issues

Starting out as a freelancer

Hi,
I'm looking to do some freelance work as a technical consultant (I'm a draftsman). I've never done anything on my own before but somehow I have one client ready to go. The problem is the client is in the US and I have no idea if this complicates things. The client company has no holdings in Canada.

Were the client a Canadian company, I going to start out very informal. Quote them an hourly rate, invoice them when the work gets done and keep track of all the records and hire an accountant come tax time (looking into the one you mentioned on your post).

Have you had international clients, specifically those in the US? Are there speed bumps I should be aware of?

PS - I'm an idiot and have no business registration or number or anything.

Thank you,

Recent changes

What 2-3 changes that you have made in the last 12 months were you most resistant to, and why? What were the outcomes of these changes and what effect (positive or negative) did they have?

Blog post process

You mentioned earlier that you blog quite and bit, and spend quite a bit of time on them. Given that, what is your process like?

Specifically:

  • do you write your posts in the Wordpress editor from start to finish, or start them in another program and then bring them over once they're finished and why?
  • do you allow any other people to edit them?
    • if you do, what do you look for in a good editor?
  • I think a lot of would-be bloggers have trouble overcomming the notion that what they're writing about has either a) already been covered or b) could be covered by someone else more qualified - do you have anything that you tell yourself or keep in mind when you reach these kinds of moments?

What's your ideal website CMS stack today?

In my experience, a lot of front-facing websites seem to have some common requirements:

  • a CMS so your client can update it themselves
  • at least some basic access control, so members can sign in and access restricted content
  • the freedom to code a totally custom feature if necessary, because no 2 sites are ever the same

What does your setup for a site like this look like? Would Wordpress still be your platform of choice, and if so, what would you do to make it more like a CMS and less like a blog?

Would you ever work for a company?

I know you've been able to work with development teams as a freelancer but would you ever consider settling down with a company full-time?

Why do you dislike PHP?

I've seen some tweets or read somewhere that you said you're not a fan of PHP, more specifically that it isn't "cool" and it's "not nice at all".

Just curious where did this opinion come from? Any bad experiences with PHP?

And since you don't like PHP, what is your favorite back end language?

Personally I think PHP is one of the nicer languages that really has come a long way in the last 5 years. Any interpreted language is cool in my book (Python included). But to each his own, right? 😄

Atom Editor

How would you compare the Atom Text Editor with Sublime Text?

How Can I Style Gulp Tasks Time in iTerm

I'm still wandering around docs and researching, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on how to specifically style timing as the case is with what I've attached. Using iTerm2 w/Oh My ZSH. Dotfiles that are being used can be found here => https://github.com/dennisgaebel/dotfiles.

I'd prefer to style the time in black with a diff color or even a solid bg fill if possible.

What technical skill gave you the most trouble when starting off?

When I started off, I found learning the intricacies of build tools like Grunt took a while to sink in. What technical skill (whether a build tool, learning a framework, understanding a particularity of a language, etc) gave you the most grief during the learning process?

what programming language would you suggest?

I am a javascript developer programming node and browser-side. Except PHP I don't know any other back-end languages. I want to learn something that I can use for web applications, but also just for other kind of programming. What language would you suggest me to use?

What brought you to JavaScript and what tips/hacks do you have for beginners wanting to speed up their learning?

What brought you to start exploring/using JavaScript, and can you describe the path for your own learning? How long before you felt you had enough of a solid foundation to build on, that moment where you understand how all the moving parts work and you can start to get efficient/creative rather than trying to figure out what's happening?

Do you have tips for beginners determined to learn, but who don't have a programming background nor much opportunity to use it in their day-to-day projects? How can a beginner find/create small learning projects which are not too complex when they don't really know what "too complex" looks like?

Hope that's not too long!

what's your detailed website development process

hey I love your talks, post , wtflexbox and you motivate me a lot .. :)
I completed my first website a kind of web app and god knows the troubles I faced. I changed the themes I designed for about 10 times( I kinda feel bored when I keep on looking at those themes again and again) .I would like to know what are your steps in building websites.do you feel bored at the designs you develop or am I the only one. Thank you.

Best customers

With regard to client work - what are some of the common traits among what you consider to be your best clients?

Chrome or Firefox Dev Tools?

I know you were trying out Firefox Dev tools for a month. What was the result of that? Have you converted over to FF now or are you back to your tried and true Chrome?
