Extension dedicated google group

Hi Jingyi,

I'm Etacarinae from the Google Product Forums › Google Chrome Forum ›
Questions and Feedback on the New Tab Page.

I think it would be most beneficial for this extension, going forward, to have its own discussion group hosted on Google Groups. I suggest this for two reasons:

1. I don't think GitHub is as easily accessible and usable, to the layman who may wish to give feedback on the extension, as a dedicated Google Group would be.
2. The particular thread we're discussing this extension in — the message users are trying to send to the Chrome team — may become diluted by discussion of this extension. It may well justify their 'suggestion' to install extensions to mimic removed functionality, as they will consider the 'noise' about the extension to satisfy us, apparent, "vocal minority".

The group could be linked to on the extensions page and even its home page switched to the group. Of course, github can still be linked for those of us who are a little more advanced and able to circumnavigate GitHub.

Refresh most vistited webpage title thumbnail upon opening new tab

Basically I would like the thumbnail of the most visited title to refresh when a new tab is open (and maybe it wouldn't refresh for a set amount of time after that). I feel this would accompany the larger thumbnail quite well. I don't know if this is possible with the api but i would be most appreciative if you could/would add it

Updates to Chrome Web Store Policy

Dear Developer,
Protecting users and user choice have been long-standing principles of Google's core philosophy. That is why three years ago, Chrome released an extension-based Settings Overrides API for Chrome on Windows that ensures all users have notice and control over any settings change that take place in their browser. Earlier this year, we implemented the same API for macOS.

Starting August 1, the only compliant way to programmatically change the startup page, homepage, search provider setting, or any other setting that has an API is via the appropriate API. If your extension affects changes to any of these functions, it must use the API.

Extensions that have been using the Webrequest API (or other mechanisms) to redirect search requests from the new tab page or the omnibox, must now use the search provider and/or new tab page API. After August 1st, extensions redirecting search requests from the new tab page or omnibox without using these APIs will be removed from the store.

Extensions that perform automatic redirections from a web page URL must display a prominent notice informing the user of the redirection. For example, if an extension redirects search queries from www.google.com (or any other search provider), the extension's notice must:

Be prominent: large, conspicuous, and close in proximity to the search box and on the search engine results page
Be timely: shown prior to the user executing the search
Be persistent: the prominent notice (including the name) cannot automatically disappear or be dismissable; it must show up every time, not just prior to the first redirect
Must show the name of the extension (and the brand of search engine, if different) and what will happen
Not look similar to a system or Chrome dialog box or user-interface element; for example, disclosures in yellow bars that look similar to Chrome's yellow ("butter") bars are not permitted.
Extensions must also comply with other Chrome Web Store policies and Google's Unwanted Software Policy.

No longer working on Chrome 50

New tab page is no longer being replaced on Chrome Version 50.0.2661.102 m on Windows 8.1.

Just a feature request:

It would be really cool to have Google account information (image, +G, Gmail, notifications) in the right top corner, because it was the only useful feature in the new new-tab-page original design.

Is it possible to have such a feature switcher? Seems to be quick to implement.

Hello, it seems there is a bit of an issue that has JUST started happening. I don't know why, but this morning, I am getting a Flash of the Google new tab page, with the google logo, this logo address bar, and the 8 tiles, and then all of a sudden, it vanishes and the extension kicks in. This never used to happen. Dont know if Chrome has updated or not, or if they have changed the new tab page online or anything since it reads google/_/ folder.. ?? Sorry I can't be more help than that.

OS: Win8 64bit.

App icons disappear randomly

Does not work correctly with Chrome 41

When Chrome 41 is set to open with a new tab page, newtab-reloaded does not show. It does show if you then open a new tab though.

Also, when Chrome 41 is set to open several pages, the first click on new tab does not show newtab-reloaded, but the 2nd click on new tab does show newtab-reloaded (sometimes...this behavior might be inconsistent).

[Regression] Can not remove app in Chrome Canary again.

The user gesture can not pass from content script to extension background page anymore.

Other Features

Hello, I am sorry, I do not know Googles API very well, I was wondering if you have access to the stuff they used to have on their New Tabs Page "previous to v33" such as the list at the bottom of recently closed tabs/groups of tabs.

Or the "Open on other devices".

I know they have moved these to the menu button or the history page, but those are just far inferior positions to place them.

I don't care too much for the Apps page but I guess someone may..

If you do not have access to that API/Data... Then fair do, I will have to learn to cope, but if you could look into it, I would be much grateful.

Append New Tabs

In the previous new tab page, if I ctrl/cmd + clicked on one of my frequently visited links, it would append the new tab to the end of my open tabs, i.e. it would show up as my last tab. With the new new tab page, it prepends the new tab i.e. it shows up as the first tab after any pinned tabs. Is there any way to restore the previous behavior? Perhaps make it toggleable if so in case people prefer the new way.

Edit/Note: I know the Chrome extension API supports specifying the index where a new tab will be created so it should be possible.

not work in Canary

Hi till yesterday it worked well in Chrome Canary but somehow today it stopped I tried everything but it seems I cant repair it.
However in Chrome it work fine also in Chromium works fine.

Sync ordering of chrome applications across devices - enhancement

This may be a little bit "dirty" of a way to do this, but chrome bookmarks have an order that is preserved across devices and can be read by extensions. To preserve the order of the chrome apps across computers you could create a bookmark folder and create bookmarks with app names to "save" the order as each bookmark will stay in it's place on the list, as well as corresponding to a certain tile space. for example, The first in goes in the upper leftmost corner, the fourth one (in a 4x5 grid) goes in the upper right corner, the 17th one would go in the lower left corner, etc. Just filling out the page from left to right, top to bottom. You could even make the bookmark folder user selectable for convenience / different setups and the user could put in bookmarks to display as apps as well.

Missing image when clicking a thumbnail

I don't know how long this has been going on, but the webstore image in the bottom right seems to change as you click a thumbnail but just before you are taken to the next page.

Both New Tab Reloaded and New Tab Reloaded (Extended) were taken down recently by the web store (2014/11/19 3:50 and 2014/11/18 1:27, GMT -5).

I'm going to simplify the description to "Restore the previous new tab page for Chrome 33+." Considering the amount of users of the extended version, I will republish it as well.

Any ideas about how to "fix" this?

Extension does not Load/Start (on certain configurations)

I have been looking for something like this for a while now, and I was hoping that it would work, sadly it fails to load and I get the NEW page as usual.

Following the instruction, I looked at my current extensions, and I have no extensions that mess with NTP directly. There is only one that "might" be the cause, but that is Tabs Outliner, which I both highly doubt is the cause, and value moreso than the old NTP.

There may be a flag or something disabled, I shall watch closely to see if there is a solution to this.

Chrome 46 fails to run this extension

The service worker on the Google's new tab page intercepts the ajax to chrome-extension:// urls from this extension and fails to fetch them, so this extension doesn't overwrite Google's new tab page.

Link to apps page

Would it be possible to mimic the old arrow bar on the left side that went to the apps page? It increases opacity on hover, and slides over to chrome://apps -- Sliding seems like it wouldn't work, but the link would be nice. (If you're really feeling crafty, you could copy the apps page and add a symmetric/opposite arrow back to chrome://newtab--the future recently closed tabs/other devices code could be shared).

2. other sessions menu
3. most visited page
4. the upper right "login container"

No longer working - Chrome 61.0.3163.100

I followed your steps listed below and it worked once. All subsequent tabs are now default and not New Tab Reloaded.

Steps to fix this extension in Chrome 61+:

1. Open Chrome settings and change the search engine from Google to Bing.
2. Open a new tab page to see Bing's home page.
3. Change the search engine back to Google.
4. Open a new tab page and this extension will load correctly.
