Exploration for LLVM + tokio

chiika-1

• A language that compiles to LLVM IR
• All functions returns a value (No void. Use 0 for void)

chiika_runtime

• Runtime written in Rust
• Built as staticlib and linked with the chiika-1 program

chiika-2

• A language that compiles to chiika-1
• Has notion of asyncness
  • Async externs are declared with extern_async.

Prerequisites

• Rust (tested with 1.74.1)
• LLVM 16

You also may want to install Ruby (see Rakefile)

• 64-bit OS only (assumes pointer size is 64bits)

Support closure (higher-order function)

Support arithmetic

chiika-1 has +/- but chiika-2 does not yet.

Support looping

To implement while, we need to allocate the loop counter.

Enumerator

Can we implement something like Ruby's Enumerator? (It uses Fiber to convert internal iterator into external iterator)

Introduce `return`

If chiika-1 has explicit return, it would be clearer what is returned.

Support non-local exit

chiika-2: support arg access after async call

Example:

fun foo(int a) -> int {
  print(100);
  print(sleep_sec(1));
  print(a);
  300
}

This compiles to wrong chiika-1 code now; a should be pushed to $env so that it can later be acquired in foo_1.

Support spawning

Some construct that calls tokio::spawn. Something like golang's go
