LaTeX3 error (deprecated variant)

The following minimal example fails, very likely because of the latest changes in LaTeX3:

\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{interchar}

\begin{document}

\end{document}

It raises:

! LaTeX3 Error: Variant form 'cx' deprecated for base form '\prop_item:cn'.
(LaTeX3)        One should not change an argument from type 'c' to type 'c':
(LaTeX3)        base form is already a variant.

(There a more errors.)

I would like to improve the babel support for XeTeX and your package would be very useful to overcome the limitations of the ‘interchar’ mechanism.
