Grok

What is grok?

Grok is a smashing web framework based on Zope Toolkit technology.

Grok uses the Component Architecture and builds on Zope concepts like content objects (models), views, and adapters. Its simplicity lies in using convention over configuration and sensible defaults when wiring components together. That means neither a configuration language like ZCML nor a lot of repetition are needed to create a web application with grok.

You can find out much more about Grok at our website.

Who is grok?

Grok is a friendly caveman from the Stone Age. He has a big club that he hunts mammoths with. He will also use this club to smash anything he doesn't like.

"ME GROK SMASH ZCML!"

Getting grok

The easiest way to get started with grok is to install the grokproject package (e.g. via easy_install grokproject) and then create a new project area by calling the grokproject script like so:

$ grokproject MyProject
... many lines of output here

This will create a project area in MyProject as well as download and install grok.

You can also get grok from GitHub:

git clone https://github.com/zopefoundation/grok.git

Then follow the instructions in INSTALL.rst.

grok's Issues

New release?

Hi, I'd like to have a new release of this package (after merging #14).
I can cut the release myself, when I get the necessary PyPI rights. My name on PyPI is icemac.

Port to Python 3

Tasks:

  • Inventorize the status of Python 3 in Grok
  • Make a plan how to port Grok (what steps are needed to run Grok on Python 3?)
  • Do the actual porting.

zope.app.dublincore.view permission renamed to zope.dublincore.view

The zope.dublincore-4.1.1-py2.7.egg package underwent changes on 2010-08-19 where zope.app.dublincore.* shims were removed and replaced with zope.dublincore.**

Some dependency has clearly changed to subsequently use the new zope.dublincore release.

The default etc/site.zcml.in still contains a reference to zope.app.dublincore.view

Simply changing that to zope.dublincore.view did not work. (how come?). The server would only run after commenting that permission grant line out completely.

Dependency on http://grok.zope.org/releaseinfo/current

$grokproject helloworld
Determining current grok version...
Error: cannot download required http://grok.zope.org/releaseinfo/current
Server may be down. Please try again later.

The server is up and returns 1.5.5 in a browser.
May be related to openssl for python Python 2.7.6 bugs
** 2.7.11 works fine **
Looks like all zope.org server issues. can't build a project either.
Couldn't this not be a requirement to create a new project?
Maybe put a file or env var somewhere with the value if unable to connect?
