A formatting standard doesn't sound bad. But for the record, I don't actually use 8 space tabs. I use tab characters because it allows anyone who edits the code in an IDE to specify if they would like the tab character to be interpreted as 2, 4, or 8 spaces. That way, one person can have it appear as 8 spaces if that's how they like it, and another who edits the same code can have it at 4 if they want without having to change the actual number of spaces. I personally have it interpret tab chars as 4 spaces on my own machine. But github seems to like interpreting it as 8 characters for some reason and I assume this is what you are referring to. Another possibility is that NetBeans interprets tab chars as 8 spaces by default and that might be what you're seeing as well.

For reference, see the age old holy war of tabs vs spaces at http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/57/tabs-versus-spaceswhat-is-the-proper-indentation-character-for-everything-in-e. Theres even a cool animation a few posts down. As I said before, I personally prefer tabs.
