chronotrains's Issues

Appears to be missing RE 11 train in Germany

The Rhein-Hellweg-Express (RE 11) connects Paderborn with the adjacent stations of Altenbeken and Lippstadt. The current route has been in service since 2016. So there should be a fast connection between these places, but chronotrains indicates it would take over 2 hours to get to Lippstadt:

image

I was even able to spot a live RE 11 train going between Paderborn and Lippstadt on the live train tracker:

image

Additional info: The RE 11 goes from Paderborn Hbf to Lippstadt in 16 minutes. The RB 89 goes from Paderborn Hbf to Lippstadt in 22 minutes (has additional stops). Hbf = Hauptbahnhof = main station in German. On weekdays, the RE 11 departs Paderborn Hbf once hourly, from 6:09 until 22:09.

Feature: show legend

The color legend is only shown on the welcome screen, but would be useful during usage as well.

Feature: Search bar

Would love to see a search bar... otherwise quite impossible to hover over your "home" station without incredible dexterity.

Account for train stations closed to each other but not directly connected

When the mouse is next to multiple train stations, it should merge all the paths from them

In the same way that around terminal stations, there is an isochrone, the same logic should apply for the departure.

It's especially needed for cities like Paris with multiple train station that are not connected with trains.

Advanced parameter insertion tool suggestion.

Hey guys, I just found your Chronotrains website and thought it is a genius tool. Great work. I would like to suggest an additional advanced tool that would make a lot of sense when illustrating new rail construction projects.
I recently proposed to the European transportation agency a new high-speed train line connecting Lille to Stuttgart passing through Luxembourg (With perhaps additional regional stops at Maubeuge, Couvin, Fumay, Bertrix, Arlon, Merzig, Homburg, Landau). Such a project would allow a whole new section of europe (South Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg) to choose traveling to UK by train instead of Flying.
To illustrate this enormous potential demand, I would suggest an advanced search option on the site, in which certain parameters could be added. So that I simulate what a new rail line could bring to the population, meaning I could manually add a time duration between St. Pancras Station and Stuttgart of 2:55h and the map would make adjustments taking this new information into account. Furthermore, you could do more than one parameter insertion, for example the time from St. Pancras to Luxemburg in 1:59h or from St. Pancras to Karlsruhe in 2:40h and St. Pancras to Frankfurt in 3:30h.
Thanks for your attention! Cheers!

Make parameters adjustable

Depending on your walking speed could vary from person to person. I would like to use chronotrains for finding suitable location for a flat and need to specify a custom amount of minutes.

Kyiv Pass, not Kiev Pass

When you hover over the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, the name changes to "Kiev Pass", which is not the correct translation. The name "Kyiv" is preserved under any circumstances. So i ask the developers to fix this absurd and offensive issues.

Dev setup

How to get data inside the database?

After:

  • setting up a db
version: "3.8"
services:
  db:
    image: postgis/postgis
    restart: always
    environment:
      - POSTGRES_USER=postgres
      - POSTGRES_PASSWORD=postgres
    ports:
      - "5432:5432"
    volumes:
      - db:/var/lib/postgresql/data
volumes:
  db:
    driver: local
  • fill in .env
  • yarn
  • yarn postinstall

What do I need to do to get data inside the database?

Complete map of Europe

Would it be possible to connect all the data and make a map of how well the cities and countries perform relative to each other?
This could be a chart where each point gets a color from the weighted area that they can reach.
For example one place might have 100 sqkm within 1 hours, 50 sqkm within 1 and 2 hours and 50 sqkm within 2 and 3 hours and so on = 100x5+50x4+50x3+...
Another place might have perhaps half and thus be a different color. Then the collection of all places would make a very interesting chart that could show "hey look how bad/good you are compared to others" and if this could be compared to driving or flying this could also show how well the trains of Europe performs in general.

Allow to exceed 5 hours of travel time

I would really love to see which destinations are reachable within more than 5 hours: like 8 or 10 hours.

I understand it might become a performance issue to compute and display that. If so, maybe it could be an option (disabled by default)?

Feature: Select trainstation by text

First of all: cool Project! It's helpful to collect ideas for travel destinations that can be done with trains.

It would be nice to have a search field to specify the desired train station by entering text instead of having to zoom and drag around to being able to point and click on the train station.

Enable direct links to a station and position

If I may suggest an improvement on the way we can link to Chronotrains.

As it is inspired by Direkt Bahn Guru, the same mechanism for linking directly to a train stop would be a great addition.
For instance, adding ?origin=8700013 in the URL would link directly to Paris Montparnasse, with its isochrones visible.

Also enabling the possibility to choose the initial zoom level and center of the map could be useful. This could be with a pattern like on the openstreetmap.org website or on umap : #<zoom>/<lat>/<lon>, or any other understandable pattern.

If those url parameters are updated automatically when panning, zooming or clicking on a station, this would make sharing a direct link very practical.
