Right now, even if you're querying for just one value the code expects it to be in a list. See this documentation:

But the problem you're having has happened to multiple people -- more useful error messages would definitely be useful and it might be worth permitting the different parameter type.

Oh. I didn't realize it was in the documentation. I was following the examples from a book "Building Probabilistic Graphical Models with Python", but the example it used had a value "1", so it worked there even without enclosing it in a list. Haha.
